Rescued another one.

A few days ago, I got an email. It was asking me if I had room for one more leo. Now, to be honest, I did not have the space for another, but I always have room.

I got this one from the same people I got Bones and Buttercup. They were told he is a SHTCT, but right now he is white and bone thin...

Judging from his length and how well defined his gender is, I would guess he is around 6-9 months old. He is about 6" long, but only weighs 16 grams.

When I got him, he had shed stuck on his face and legs. I got the shed off without a problem, but when he opened his eyes, they were covered with a dark mucus.

I have been keeping them flushed with saline solution and they are getting better... Barely. He is opening his eyes more, but the mucus is still there. A vet recommended getting triple antibiotic ointment, but the kind for eyes is prescription only, so we are going back to the vet soon.

He isn't eating on his own. I was told when I got him, that he was taking meal worms by hand, but I haven't had any luck with that. Today, I mixed up some Slurry (Thank you Marcia!).

At first he wasn't interested, but he bit the eyedropper and I gave him a mouthful. After that, he licked it right out of the dropper. We will be doing this twice a day until he starts eating on his own.

I do not have a picture of him as of yet. I just fed him, so that is enough stress for one night. I will try to remember to get one tomorrow, but I work early to late, so it might be Monday.

Comments? Suggestions?

Here is a picture:

I'm still giving him slurry and washing his eyes out. Honestly, there hasn't been much change in his condition. It's too early to really see any improvements, but I'm trying to stay hopeful.

I have no problem getting him to eat the slurry, but I am really worried about his eyes. I have been trying to keep his eyes washed out, but it's hard because he never opens them.

It looks like we will be making a trip to the vet.

He is doing much better. His color is still faded, but he is up to 18 grams and his eyes have cleared up.

I switched from saline solution to Zoo Med's Repti Turtle Eye Drops. It's just saline solution with vitamin A and B12.

I have decided to name him Spaz. I was hesitant to name him, as I honestly didn't have high hopes for him... After watching him get better and seeing his personality, I think it is a good fit.

He has a lot of energy. Always crawling around and exploring, but when you go to touch him, he spazes out.

He still isn't eating on his own, but is taking about 0.5cc of slurry nearly every night. Some nights he just isn't hungry.

He is passing his food, so that is good.

Does anyone have any tips to wean him off of slurry? I keep a dish of meal worms in there all the time, but he isn't eating them. I might drop a cricket in with him, just to see if it works.

aww man his head to body ratio is huge. he looks like those oober skinny supermodels :( im glad you rescued him. to get him off the slurry try taking a meal worm by hand and dunking the head in the slurry. try hand feeding him like that for a while.. then just meal worms by hand... then him hunting by himself. again, thanks for rescuing this little supermodel.

I put three crickets in with him last night.... Today there was only one!!! So, either the one that was last, ate the other two, or Spaz ate them. I say it was Spaz.

Spaz is eating on his own now. He ate 6 crickets tonight. I have stopped feeding the slurry.

I am pretty sure that his growth is stunted from his malnourishment.
