My 'rescue' gecko, Grace... (Warning, pictures that may be disturbing)

First off, no, she's not a gecko from a pet store that I felt bad for.. Not that I am against doing that, and have myself purchased an A.F.T with MBD from a local shop because I have a bleeding heart.. but this girl has a story of her own.

My good friend Marc, runs a Red-Eared Slider rescue here in Ontario and as his popularity has grown, he's started receiving requests to take in other exotics. He contacted me about his new gecko and I of course, asked to see pictures. I was appalled. This is what he sent me;

My heart stopped. I told him that honestly that gecko may not have much time left & also that it wasn't going to eat those cubes. (lol) Following my advice he quickly offered dusted crickets by hand and the gecko ate them right up. The next day she was able to catch them herself. She's been eating almost daily since. (This was thirteen days ago that he recieved her) I offered to take her in, since Marc has his hands full already and sweet as he is, isn't a Leo expert. (Nor do I claim to be, but I know a bit more, and don't have dozens of RES to also care for)

So... I picked her up today. She has some odd scars along her body and a lot of skin on her toes. She'll be having warm baths to try and help the toe skin every day, commencing tomorrow. She's freaked out enough for today.

Wish me luck?

Oh, and if you are interested in tracking her progress, I've set up a Facebook group.

I'll be posting weekly updates including pictures and weights.

Good Luck! I hope she gets better. I had a pet store save that died on me about a day after I got her, but hoopefully that doesn't happen to you!

Oh, those pictures make my heart ache. I truly hope that everything works out for you. This lucky little girl is in very good hands.

Do you have a name for her yet?

She's gorgeous. I've brought geckos back from a state like that before. That she's eating is a good sign! Keep her heat up and keep feeding her as much as she can gobble. As long as it's not parasites or something worse, she should be fine. You might want to get a fecal exam done just to be sure there aren't any other problems

Thank you. Silly as it sounds, I can see the "spark" in her eyes. And from the way she was eating at the rescue, she seems to have a will to live. Still a long way to go, of course. I'm really hoping she is able to recover!

Her name is Grace. :) She was going to be "Hudson" if she was a male. And thank you, I hope she's in good hands-Admittedly, I've never rehabbed a gecko in this poor of shape. My AFT that had MBD wasn't this starved.

A fecal exam is a great idea.. I'm going to see if any of the local vets could do one. (My closest herp. vet is an hour away.) She's nice and warm and currently has a dish of mealworms at all times. I was going to get her some wax-worms at the reptile show today but it was too packed. I don't want to over-do her on those anyway.

And thank you-I think she'll be very pretty when she recovers. Of course, she'll never be included in my breeding group.

Good luck with her rehab.
I would give her slightly higher temps than usual and keep a good count on her mealies to make sure she is eating.
Slow and steady wins the race when emaciated animals are concerned

Wow! Those pictures of her are horrifying! I cannot imagine how a poor little leo can get into that condition. Sadly, our local reptile store that is suppose to be "better" than p**** ad p******* have a leo that looked like that. When I saw it, I vowed never to spend my money there ever again and I havent. Anyways, good luck!

There's a store in my area that is similar. Sometimes it is hard to go in there. :(

Thanks for all the support guys! I think she had some mealies last night as there are considerably less in the dish! She was up exploring in the dark last night.

Poor girl :( It sounds like she's off to a good start on the road to recovery though. Where abouts in Ontario are you? I'm in Ottawa :)

I don't like giving out my exact location on forums where anyone can see, but, I picked her up from the Missisauga expo and don't live too far from there :)
