You need a thermostat if the temperature on the floor over your hot side is getting higher than the low 90's (farenheit). In order to know if this is the case, you need a digital thermometer with a probe (the probe should sit on top of the hot side) or a tempearture gun. Check amazon.com for "reptile thermometer" and you'll see a pretty cheap one. I have been successful setting up 10 gallon vivs with a zoo-med mini (1-5 gallon) UTH, ceramic tile and no thermostat and the temps seem to be fine that way, but you do need to get the thermometer and check. If you can keep the temps correct with no thermostat, then you're fine. If not, there's a chance the gecko could burn itself uknowingly (it happened to one of my geckos years ago that liked to hang out under something that was keeping too much heat in).
