The only place that actually says that sand is bad is on the internet.....Every respected Author of Gecko manuals says that sand is fine. Even long time (20 years) say that they have been using sand with no problems. Sand is discouraged for hatchlings....but consider this.....the natural substrate that ths reptile lives on in their natural habitat....is sand......they don't have paper towels or vermiculite in the desert in Afghanistan or Pakistan.....so if sand was truly bad....there would in theory no longer be any wild geckos.

Don't wanna start an argument but if you want to get technical Leopard geckos in the wild avoid sandy desserts like your thinking of and actually live in a more rocky dessert with clay some grass and virtually no sand. and i don't know too many people that house their geckos on vermiculite i know they use it as a laying/incubation medium. As for the books well when they were published has alot to do with it it wasnt till a year or two ago that authors began to notice that sand is potentially harmful to lizards.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I will consider switching the substrate, but I'll use sand for this month and than possibly switch.

and the "un named" Gecko was originally named Diego, but when I bought him he was a little on the slim side and over the week that i had him he just got skinnier, so I returned him for the "new" Diego

The "Patternless" Diego is the one I bred with Dizzy.....not sure what the result will likely be....any ideas?

FINE sand is bad and course playground sand is said to be better(not ok). I know a major breeder(no names) does infact keep their geckos on sand and has great animals:main_yes: I am not a fan of sand myself though.

They look great to me.

they look good but the last one in the last pic looks to need a lil more groceries if ya know what i mean. the patternless bred with a normal will result in normal babies het for patternless unless shes het for patternless then they will be half of them will be patternless and the others i am pretty sure will be normals het for patternless. if patternless bred to another patternless will have all patternless babies. If i am wrong someone correct me ..i dont recommend sand either but if you want something more eye pleasing you can try repticarpet or tile.

Yeah I didn't think the last one was at all healthy....that's why i traded him for the first one. I wasn't paying for a gecko that was already sick when I bought it.
