New rescue...need advice asap please

I just rescued my friends boyfriends leo. When I asked him how long it has been since he fed it, he said "I don't remember" :main_angry: . He keeps it on calcium sand, and when I told him it was bad for it, he said "oh, that's how it gets it's calcium" WHAT???? The tank had a huge pile of feces and the whole tank reeked. There was NO water in its bowl. He had a UTH plugged in, but when he unplugged it, it was cold so obviously it wasn't working. It's also not hand tame. I tried to pick him up and it just hissed and wiggled. I also think it might habve MBD (or whatever it's called). I'm going to get an apointment for a fecal asap. I'm also going to Petco first thing in the morning and getting reptile carpet and a UTH. I fed it 3 mealies because I don't want to overfeed it (if that's possible). I'm in the process of getting the tank cleaned and reset up with paper towel until tomorrow.

These are the best pics I could get. Does it look like it has the bone disease? Is it even worth it to try to save it? Or is it a lost cause? It doesn't look as bad as some I've seen, but still

Also, could you tell me that type? It looks like a Snow something, but I could be wrong

I'm not even sure if this is the right place to post this, sorry

looks like a normal to me. Honostly it realy doesnt even look all that bad, the tail is alittle skinny, but nothing a nice big bowl of mealies couldnt fix;-) As far as MBD, I cant realy see the lege all that well, but from what I can see they look fine, the tail doesnt look kinky. I beleive you have a semi healthy gecko there

Whew...thank you

It looks fatter in the pic. It's skinnier in person. I know that sounds weird, but it's true lol

The conditions the tank were in were atrocious. I almost puked at the smell

It's weird because it looks yellow sometimes and white at others. That's why I wasn't sure if it was a Snow lol

It also has stuck shed on its toe which I don't know how I'm going to get off since it's not hand tame

Here is the best pic of its leg I could get:

Yeah, looks as if maybe he just recently let it get out of hand, im guessing it was purchased from a pet store, looks like it grew a good bit from the time he got it.

No, he got it from a friend who didn't take care of it either :main_rolleyes:

I definitely can see MBD starting in her front arms so make sure she gets plenty of calcium while with you. Good luck with her!

Wow, the first pic it's just the same I saw in a pet store here some days ago. A pile of feces and dead food, using coarse sand as substrate. I took a few pics with the cell phone just in case :main_rolleyes:

I also think the little guy is quite healthy, but I would take it to the vet anyway or at least a stool for test, and mention about the MBD. Good look with him/her.

did your freind want to give it up for did you jist tell him he wasnt looking after it and he should give it to you? because that gecko looks fine, yeah it needs a little more food but its definitaly not seriously ill and maybe he olnly cleaned the tank once a week so the pile built up? iv seen much bigger piles of poop than that in pictures. id hate to think you told him he was abusiong his animal when he was probably just going on pet shop advice which although is often wrong, is what alot of people trust and therefore follow.

it does look like its getting MBD but good dusting of its food and a calcium bowl in its tank will help prevent any further escalation of that problem

Luckily you did catch the MBD in time to stop most of the damage. It's legs will always be bowed but with some regular calcium it shouldn't really affect it. Keep an eye on the fresh feces and keep it quarantined. It should do fine, good luck.

Yes, I see the beginning of MBD in the front legs of the gecko. When you take it to the vet, see if you can get some liquid calcium (NeoCalglucon) and give the gecko about 0.25 ml daily in addition to a bowl of calcium in it's enclosure.

The gecko looks otherwise in fairly good shape, and should make a complete recovery (other than bowed legs) with proper care and feeding. Good luck!

I think you SHOULD'VE lended them some advice a LONG time ago...

I knew he had a gecko, but I had never seen it. Yesterday was the first time I had been to his house. Don't say stuff like that unless you know the situation

Can't edit for some reason...lol

Anyway, thanks :)

I'm sure it looked alot worse than it actually was. I'm just not used to seeing a leo in that condition

Probably a little overreaction on my part, but oh well. I'd rather overreact than not do anything lol

I asked him if he wanted to care for it anymore and he said no. I asked if I could take it and he said sure. He knew he didn't have the time or money to care for it. I do, so he let me take him :). It was more the condition of the tank. Yea, that pile doesn't look big, but there was more. Instead of cleaning the poop out, he had just dumped more sand on top. So there were about 3 levels of poop piles. Plus, he rarely fed the thing so imagine how long it had to go to get that much poop built up. He had the leo for over a year and had never cleaned the tank out. I didn't tell him he was abusing his animal. I have more tact than that lol.

It doesn't look that bad, a little MBD is showing I agree. Just give it some good fat mealies and crickets and love and I bet it will be fine.

As far as the abuse thing, not cleaning the tank out an entire year? That is simply someone being LAZY in IMO, time or money is one thing not taking care of an animal by not cleaning up poop, that doesn't say much about his own hygiene. I would have had a lot of words for that person, forget tact that's animal abuse plain and simple.

I've only known him for about 4 months, but he has impeccable hygiene. So that's why I didn't get why he wouldn't clean the leos tank. It's sad because he has two dogs and 4 cats also. They are all a perfect weight and well taken care of. That's why I didn't get why he said he didn't have the time or money for the leo. Yea, because a gecko is sooo hard to care for :main_rolleyes:

The leo looks pretty good with the exception of the front leg. I'm glad he decided to let you care for it before it got too bad. You did the right thing.
P.S. I agree that not cleaning an animals cage in a over a year is animal abuse.
