Hi, I'm brand new to this forum. I got my leopard geckos 5 months ago when they were only about 2 weeks old. They are awesome pets and I love them to bits! I'm wondering if anyone could help me out with their morphs, the first two pictures are of Smudge and the third is of Soap. I tried to keep the pictures as true to their colors as possible, which is pretty difficult with Soap as she has very light pink/purple and yellow markings. I think all leopard gecko morphs are super cool so I would like to know mine! Any and all help is appreciated, thank you!

The bottom one looks to be a blizzard eclipse. The top one I would need a fully body picture of. I would say the top looks like a high yellow maybe, but it could be something else. Need a better picture of the top one

I would agree the top one looks high yellow. I don't think you can see the eyes well enough in the bottom picture to know if they're black or not. Also, many blizzards have black eyes but are not eclipse.

I would think that test breeding to an non-blizzard eclipse would be the only way, but I have no experience with blizzards, so that is just my educated guess.

It says it here, though, that many blizzards have solid eyes but are not eclipse.
Blizzard - Leopard Gecko Wiki

From what is says on there is that it's just nothing genetic behind it. They just have eclipse eyes. Meaning they are still eclipse just no gene really controls that as far as they know. Eclipse is something dealing with eye. Just because they can't control the eyes genes for blizzards doesn't mean they are any less eclipse than any other eclipse leopard gecko.

Genetics is a lot more complicated than we like to think.

"Eclipse" is what we've chosen to call a the trait of solid black eyes that's controlled by a specific gene (or more likely, set of genes). Having solid black eyes doesn't necessarily make a gecko an eclipse, because when we say "eclipse" we're talking about a trait controlled by a specific gene or gene set. If that particular gene is not what's causing the eyes to be black, than it's not an eclipse. That's sort of like saying that as long as a gecko has the trait of no black pigmentation, it's a tremper albino when, in reality, the trait could be caused by any one of three specific genes (or gene sets).

Nobody really knows if the black eyes in blizzards is caused by the eclipse gene. Many genes have been shown not to follow traditional Mendelian laws, so it could be possible that it is the eclipse gene, but not showing the normal pattern of inheritance because it's being affected by other sets of genes. Again, genetics is way more complicated than we make it out to be. We (as in all humans) don't even understand a lot of it. We just can't say for sure. There are also other traits linked to the eclipse trait such as having white feet and a white nose that the black-eyed blizzards and super snows don't show.

I don't think people consider black-eyed blizzards and SS to be eclipse unless they're proven or the genetics made it so it was the only outcome possible. It isn't passed own the same as regular eclipses.

I think it's a little bit silly that the wiki says that there is nothing genetic behind it. Of course there's genetics behind it, or it wouldn't exist. It's just another one of those exceptions to Mendelian genetics and we don't know how to explain something outside of the Mendelian paradigm. Sort of like human eye color, which also doesn't follow Mendelian genetics.

This thread is by someone who hatched out a black-eyed SS and needed help determining if it was actual eclipse, or just a SS with black eyes.
