My local reptile shop has been breeding and selling all manor of reptiles for 22 years now.
He says that calcium sand is absolutely no danger to geckos and the rumours that they are stem from old types of sand and Internet hype.
He also says that in 10 years of using calcium sand he has never encountered an issue.
What do you guys think?
Calcium sand.... yay or nay?

I personally have never used it. I have however used real sand many years ago when I didn't know any better (gasp!). Even then I never had a problem with any of my geckos. I have always been under the assumption that with proper husbandry a little dirt or sand will be digested properly. However it is better to error on the side of caution and use a substrate that will prevent impaction all together. Sooo, I guess I am really no help at all:)

Not going to get into the sand debate but I will say that sand is not an ideal substrate for Leopard Geckos while it is for other species. A more ideal substrate would be some form of packed dirt/clay mix. A product like Excavator clay is a good option.

You will always find people who say they've used it for years with no problems. But you will also find many impacted geckos. My opinion is why risk it? Loose substrate is not best for leopard geckos. They do live on hard packed sand/clay/dirt.
