Ok so I kept a leopard gecko a few years back and had to sell her because I moved. Now I am a little older and have some money to spend I want the new gecko to have the best and stay healthy. I was wondering is there any specific water to use for geckos? I dont feel safe with tap water and was thinking about buying distilled water and using it for the the moist hide, water dish, etc. Is distilled water safer than tap water? If not what would be the best choice? Also I had a previous incident with eco earth. I put the brick with water and let sit overnight. The next day I went to get some to put in the humid hide but it had mold all over the top of the ecoearth. I want to know if I did something wrong. Please let me know if you have experience with this and what I can do to prevent it. Thanks so much :D

You can use distilledwater if you like. As far as being better foryourgevko than tap water, I am not sure what the quality of water is in your area. I buy the Eco earth that is loose packed. I buy it on Amazon but I have also seen it in +++++ before. It's like $15 for a large bag that would last you for a while if you only have a couple geckos.

Ok and you have never had any problems with mold? Thanks for the reply

Not only have I never had any problems with mold when hydrating it, but I've kept the extra in a huge ziploc for months and never had that problem. I do sometimes get mold in my planted tanks, but it eventually goes away. Maybe there were some mold spores in the batch you had.

I've only ever seen it mold if there was a lot of excess moisture and it was tightly sealed. I rehydrate my bricks in a bucket, pour off any excess water when it is done, then store it in a ziplock bag with no problems.

I use tap water on eco earth, but as for them drinking I use spring or r.o. water. Many feel that distilled water is so pure it tends to pull minerals from the human body I would think it would have similar affects on reptiles.

Yep, I have to agree with the above. I use tap water for drinking water (I feel our water source is safe), but if not, bottled spring water or filtered tap water. Distilled water is used to mist cages/hides because it won't leave water spots on everything, but that's really only an issue if you're misting the entire cage.

I use tap for all the animals and have had no issue with it, no need to buy distilled water. You wont see any benefits unless your tap has some serious issues which if it did would be unsafe for you to drink. Also with the eco earth I have never had it mold or go bad.
