Leopard gecko broken tail anomaly

Hi there,

my first baby leo just hatched yesterday and made me pretty scared about its tail. It seems like broken since gecko hatched, bot gecko does not want to drop it and it seem to be normal otherwise. Is this some kind of genetical related anomaly or was just this gecko in some strange unusual position when it was in egg yet ? Have you ever saw something like this ?

Thank you all for your replies.

I have one like that. I was told that it won't hurt the gecko and that it may be genetic or an incubation issue. In any case, that gecko (or the one I have) should not be bred and should be adopted out as a pet. If you get more than one like that from your pair, you might have something to worry about with the parents genetically (I know I am worried about my pair).

Thanks for reply. I have another 7 eggs from same parents in incubator & 8 from same male but different female, so I will be more sure if it is genetical or incubation issue when they hatch.

My gecko with the bent tail is also a hatchling less than a week old. But my thought is that the tail won't get straighter and will always be bent. You also might want to check your gecko over carefully for any other deformities. Mine has the bent tail, different sized eyes, and a cleft lip.

UPDATE !

Yesterday evening / this morning another of my leos hatched & they seem to be much bigger than one with deformity, so not only its tail, but actual size are unusual. Also, I think this little gecko did not shed yet (it is week since it hatched), so it will grow really fast or even die, I will keep this thread updated.

UPDATE 2 !

Little "Broken Tail" seems to be pretty normal, just with strange tail and a bit smaller, but eats really good and is not picky at all (eats roaches, crickets, mealworms, ...). Hopefully gecko will be healthy even when older.

The reason of this anomaly is probably bad temperature when incubating eggs (it was just about 25 C / 76-77 F) due to thermostat probe incorrectly placed ... other geckos seems to be 100% okay after I changed probe position.

UPDATE 3 !

Gecko is looking good, but growing really slowly. Geckos that are 20 days younger than this one are now bigger & this problematic gecko is not gaining weight constantly, but like in a periods (1 week major gain, next week minor gain).
