Are UTH generally re-usable on other tanks once peeled off?

I'm hoping to get a leo soon, and I'm going to start he/she out in a 10g (my pet store ones are tiny still, and I have no breeders around me) and put a wanted ad out for a larger one as it grows. Can I simply peel off the UTH when the time comes and stick it onto the new tank (provided it's the right size ofc) or will the adhesive not stick? Is there some kind of tape I could use safely to attach the UTH onto the future tank should it NOT stick? Thanks!

The adhesive the second time is not great. Apparently ZooMed states that their UTH's should not be peeled off and reapplied because they won't work well. Your best bet is to get heat cable (http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Repti...=1405309770&sr=8-2&keywords=zoomed+heat+cable) and Nassau tape (aluminum foil tape with adhesive backing which you can get at Home Depot) and tape the heat cable to the bottom of the tank as per the instructions. Then you can remove it and re-tape it to the new enclosure. You can often find it for a good price on ebay though the Amazon.com price isn't bad either.

If you want to be able to (effectivly) reuse your UTH, You could use a trick that I use for my snake tanks. You need to take aluminum foil, and stick it to the adhesive side if the heat pad. Make sure that there are no air bubbles, or it could be a serious fire hazard! Trim off the excess foil from around the egdes. Then all you have to do is use electrical tape, or any other heat resistant tape (such as the one Aliza mentioned), and tape it onto any tank that you desire. When you transfer it to another tank though, be sure not to bend the heat pad sharply, or it can break some of the fragile internal components of it, making it useless, or even a fire hazard. And please remember to use a thermostat or dimmer to regulate the heat output :) Welcome to the forum, and I hope that we can answer any questions you may have about your (soon to be) new family member :D

You could try using electrical tape to secure the heat pad to the bottom of the enclosure. I have used electrical tape on my heat pad to secure down a temp probe and have had no problems so far. Hope this helps:)!

Thanks for the replies, you all were helpful! All the supplies I'm getting are from one website, which doesnt have a flukers UTH sadly. (as I see they are a bit cheaper) If I don't take off the peel that holds the adhesive, and use a safe tape to attach it, will it melt the sheet that protects the adhesive and be a fire hazard?

And yes, I will be using something to regulate the temp - a rheostat. I can't find a Hydrofarm thermostat for a sane price online (I'm in Canada, websites that are reasonable and ship to here are hard to find!) so I'll be using a rheostat with careful monitoring :)

Sounds good. I have not had any luck attaching UTH's with electrical tape or duct tape --they sag. My only success has been with Nassau tape, as I mentioned above.

I would not leave the peel on, as I highly doubt that is made to be heat resistant and will likely create a mess. As mentioned, sticking the pad to aluminum foil usually works well.

I'm scared to stick it to the foil like you said though, because you mentioned if I mess up and leave an air pocket it's a fire hazard. Heck, I can't even get the air bubbles out of a sticker! So I'm worried about trying that. It sounds like a great solution but risky for me personally. I think I'll just slap the UTH to the tank when the time comes, and get a larger tank instead of having the leo in my 10g to start. I'll just stuff it with hides. :) thank you though!

Well if you ever decide to brave the foil, you know how for the future ;) But your plan sounds perfectly fine. Be sure to show us pictures of your new gecko when ever you get him/her! :D
