New Gecko Setup

Hi all!

I recently have purchased a new leopard gecko! His name is Kane and he appears to be only a few weeks old. What I have set up is a 20 gallon long tank. He has an 8W UTH which is positioned on the left side. Also on that side is a warm dry hide along with a moist hide. On the flip side, there is a larger hide on the cool end which also allows for some climbing. There is also a blue daylight bulb (came with the kit) so there is just there as it was free. Let me know what you think! I will post pictures tomorrow, it appears tapatalk is having some issues with picture uploading at the moment!

Looking good! Do you have a thermometer(digital with a probe) to make sure the floor temperatures are correct? 8 Watts is pretty high for a heat pad, so it may get too hot without a thermostat.

Currently don't, but plan on getting one I think. I had a leopard gecko years ago and never used a thermostat and didn't appear to have an issue with it being too hot, but I will be monitoring it to make sure. Might just get one just to be safe.

A way to be certain would be to pick up a reptile temperature gun that takes instant readings of surface temperature and see if the floor is around 90 F, but I also highly recommend a thermostat. It provides a bit of extra safety in case the heater malfunctions somehow.

Looks great!

That's quite a big tank for such a little gecko. I would push his hides and foodbowl a bit closer together so he doesn't have to walk too far to get to them. They feel very nervous when they're out in the open and exposed to allowing them to stay hidden will decrease their stress and may help them grow a bit faster and be overall more healthy.

Other than the size its a great setup! I'm make sure your temps are correct like Indyana suggests. It will be perfect for him as an adult :)

While I have this thread being somewhat hot, I have the light shown in the picture because it came in the kit. I currently don't use it, but my air temps are a bit low, but when I have turned it on it raised them up to the 80s which I like. My question here is does this work for now? It is a 75W blue incandescent day bulb, is this acceptable or should I get something else to keep things warmer during the day?

Air temps aren't as important as floor temps. As long as your floor temp on the warm side is 90 degrees, what you have should be fine.
