Hello everyone of geckoforums! This is my first post as you can tell and I will be getting a leopard gecko within a month or so. Since I am just a teenager without a job, I already have a setup for a mealworm colony because I feel it will be cheaper than buying them. Also, I already have a 10 gallon fish tank, and I was wondering if this is large enough for my gecko! I may be able to upgrade around christmas time if it is required. I have heard that 10 gallon tanks are perfect for 1 gecko, but I have also heard you should have atleast a 20. Out of personal experience, can anyone give me your opinion if a 10 gallon tank will be suitable for a leopard gecko?:D

Hello little one~ Welcome to the forum and I hope all your questions get answered. As for the one you asked today I will answer for you. I have three leopard geckos myself and a skink. My two females are in a 36x18x18 exo terra which is about the size of a 40 gallon tank. Now, I have this large of a tank as to happily have two female leopard geckos together, it's not needed, but I like to spoil my babies. Now I also have a little male leopard gecko who is in a tank alone, due to not being able to be housed with females or males. My little male is in a 10 gallon Martymade tank which is perfectly fine. A 10 gallon can hold a single gecko for its whole life if you wish to keep it there. Now a 20 gallon would be much nicer allowing you to put more hides and things to climb and explore on for the little one. So if you feel the need to go bigger it's fine. So, all in all, a 10 gallon is fine and it's the smallest you should go. A 20 gallon would be perfect for your little one giving him a lot of room to explore and do stuff. A 30 gallon would be a bit ify for me with one leopard gecko seeing as you don't want the little one to get lost or not being able to find its way. Also always remember. No matter what the people in the pet stores say NEVER use sand. I hope this helps you out in spoiling your new little critter.

@Ruvik Thank you! I feel like a ten gallon will be too small though. I will keep him in a 10 gallon until Christmas and then purchase a 20 gallon tank for him! Also, is there a difference between male and female, like how calm they are and how active they are, or generally nice? By the way, I planned on getting reptile carpet for him:D

I think the little one will love a 20 gallon. The difference between male and female... Hmm. From the ones I have I don't really find there is a difference. With mine, I find that each one has their own personality. Like Viserion is more skittish and careful, but a big pig. Saphira is very calm and chilled. And Smaug is very very inquisitive about every, and a really aggressive eater. As for the reptile carpet, it is alright. I am getting rid of the reptile carpet for smaug, when he is hunting crickets and tries to bite them, he can miss at times and hit the carpet instead. His teeth then get stuck in the carpet and he struggles to get free. I hate seeing him do that so i try to use tongs to feed him for now. As soon as he is big enough I will switch him to eco earth like my big females are on.

Check your local pet stores for sales on tanks, the large pet store chains run sales $1 per gallon so you could pick up a 20g Long for $20 very nice price.

I agree with Ruvik a 10g will work but I do like the 20g L better.
