calcium sand...

has any one here used calcium sand? becuase i want to switch from carpet to calcium sand 'cause the carpet stinks and i haerd that sand dosn't. also anyone know the best brand you know, finest particles etc. thanx.

All sand in my mind is bad. Calcium sand is the WORST because the geckos eat it the most. Why dont you use paper towels? You can replace them every week and they are super easy to use.

Theres also a lot more cleaning with sand, I used to have it and my geckos would always get it in their water bowl and their food bowl. We didn't want them to accidentally ingest it, so we were cleaning all the time!!!

man, im ganna try to put a stop to this befor this thread gets out of hand. larry, sand is bad manely because they dont live on sand in the wild. if you want natural looking, go to your local home depot, or lowes. pick up some clay tile, its safe, cheap, and easie to clean. ifyour going to use sand your going to have to clean it atleast once every other day any way, so if you get tile all you have to do is lift it up and wipe it off. for a while when i displayed my geckos this is what i use. my uncle who keeps his in a 50 gallon breeder tank uses tiles. they look great because you can get ones that look like dirt or sand. tile is also a great heat conductor. if you MUST use sand, and there is no way for us to get you away from it, then again, go to home depot. quickcreat makes play sand. buy a bag of that and get some sort of fine screen. sift the sand to get the big chunks out. and then use that sand. another choice is also made by quickcreat. it is labeled baked, kiln dried, and sifted. eather one of those are the lesser of the evil sand

Larry, I would like to recommend that you do a search on this forum for all the other threads posted on the subject of calcium sand. Hopefully, it will save a lot of us answering your question, which you should have answered, and convince you not to use calcium sand as a substrate for your gecko.
