I have both right now and the heat tape is defineatly more consistent. I find that the heat rope is 'spoty' if you will. A lot of temperature variances along the length.

I have never used heat tape,so i have nothing bad to say about it. but i have used heat rope for a while now and i think it works well. i use it to heat my leo's and carpet pythons. it keeps the temps perfect.and depending on the size u get. i have lot of rope left over. its good

I have a stupid question. How does heat tape work? Is it like a heat mat? Just plug it into the wall or do you heat it up first? Is it as good or almost as good as a UTH?

Collin, heat tape comes in a roll, you order as much or as little as you want. It comes in sizes 3" up to 17" wide I believe. You have to wire it yourself, so that is the part that some people do not care for and would rather buy a premade UTH. Also, there is no sticky side. It's perfect for rack setups, and I'll be putting it in mine today. I've heard good things about it, but no product is perfect!

agreed, like the heat tape a lil better but compared to a easy heat roof de-icer i give it a tie!!!

I've used both. For homemade racks I was a fan of heat tape/flexwatt as far as being able to install. For the animal plastic racks I had, the heat rope worked well and had the grooves cut out in the shelfs.

To me it comes down to the type of racks you have, they both work great.

Heat tape for a larger collection/rack, one or two tanks better off with a heatmat. Heat tape youll need a thermostat forsure, some heatmats you dont.

Great point about thermostats. I use them on all my heating sources to ensure the geckos are receiving the proper heat.

I have only used heat cable, and i really like it.the only downside to it is that you have to either route the rack or raise the tubs to fit the cable under the tubs.I have heat cable in my vision rack,as well as my homeade rack.Works great for me!I definately think heat tape is used more though.
