Yes. But, and under-tank heater (UTH) is the preferred method of heating for leopard geckos. Since they are nocturnal, in the wild they rely on the heat from the sun that is absorbed in the rock and hard-pack clay soil which keeps their tummy warm. This is essential for their digestion, metabolism, and immune system.

I would just like to add that the under the tank heaters are also cheaper to run than light bulbs are-they generally are not more than 25 watts and they work great
As Marcia said-belly heat is essential for a Leos good health
In addition-you will see your Leo out and about more with no over head lights on the enclosure

For the UTH... does it just slide under the tank and rest between the tank and the stand, or is there anything special which needs to be done?

Sorry for the Noobish questions guys...
