cage smells AWFUL

i have tried EVERYTHING.

i upgraded my adults to a 20 gallon tank from a 10 gallon after rescuing them from someone on craigslist. there are 2 in there. their 10 gallon NEVER smelled. but ever since i put them in the 20G, it has been AWFUL.

i have tried bleaching everything, using dishsoap, boiling water, washing the repticarpet in the machine, washing it with dishsoap and letting it airdry, etc.

i just did all this yesterday, and it smells even worse than it did before. there is no poop in there, i clean it out every time i see one. there are no decaying bugs, everything is clean.

my geckos are healthy, both are eating and have normal poop.

i just don't know what to do! can it be the cage furniture??? i don't know how it smells so bad so soon though, even after i've cleaned all of them very well and made sure they didn't smell when i put them back in the cage. it's mking my room smell disgusting and i can barely be in there.

any suggestions?

Is any of the cage furniture porous? We used to have the little split logs in our tanks. We got rid of them because we noticed they absorbed moisture, and began to smell bad. We made sure anything else we put into the tanks was not porous. Otherwise, I don't really have any other ideas since you already washed everything.

i already tried boiing the cage furniture.

i did have a VERY porous rock with a hole in the middle that i had in there, but i took it out about a week ago because i thought it might be the problem. i do have a stick that my mom carved and i baked to get rid of bugs, maybe that is the problem. i'll take that out and see what happens

What are you using as substrate?

Do not febreeze anything, I don't think that's safe for them to come in contact with.. (I wouldn't, anyway)

i'm using half reptile carpet, and half paper towel. i had shelf liner in there, but i thought that might have been making it smell, so i took it out. but it definitely wasn't.

i wasn't going to febreeze it, i also don't think it's safe

i would completely clean the tank out and bleach it. I would also throw all of the porous cage furniture away and buy or make new stuff. THats what I ended up doing with a couple of those coconut hides... they absorb odor like no other!

What kind of diet do they have? When they go to the bathroom, is it very soft consistancy, runny, or a firm pooh? What is the proportion of white to brown in it, and can you see undigested pieces of food or does it look normal?

they eat everything- crickets, mealworms, superworms, and the occassional waxworm.

their poo is firm and there are no undigested pieces...it's completely normal and has been ever since i got them.

i'm so frustrated! tomorrow i guess i'm just going to rebleach/wash and throw most of the stuff away and get new stuff =/
