A substrate for my leo to dig in?

I recently moved my leo into a bigger setup in the effort to help him lose weight along the more strict food schedule. (He lost weight but still a tubby gecko at 105 grams~!)

So far he's been more active in the new setup which is awesome. However he's been expressing a need to dig. He's ripping apart the paper towel substrate in the process. (BTW the temperature range is usually 90-78 so that's not the issue)

Since I have a setup that is easier to clean, I'm thinking about getting him a substrate worthy of his recent digging habits.

Any ideas??

I was told that Calcium based sand is OK. Just make sure it says "Safe for leopard geckos"

Whatever you do , DO NOT use calcium sand or ground walnuts shells, they are two of the most dangerous substrates for your leopard geckos and cause impaction due to the inability to break them down. Also, just because it says safe for leopard geckos doesnt mean it's true. If you really want to give your leo something to dig in buy a tupperware container and fill it with eco-earth, it'll give him a place to dig around and can double as a humid hide if you mist it.

^ i like that idea, loose particle substrate is generaly just not safe for leos, but a small container of ecoearth maynot be too bad.

I think I'll try that out! Thanks!
