UTH on tile

I know I have another question. :D

I have a UTH on for about 4 hours and the ceramic tile is up to 95 degrees in the center but as you get to the sides it drops to 90 and the tile beside is only 85. I am thinking I need to keep it on for a few more hours to really heat up but I would like some feed back to be sure I'm right about this.

What's the size of the tile? As long as the gecko has a place in the 84-94 range where it can heat the entire length of belly and tail it should be fine, as they thermoregulate by moving from place to place. What do you mean by "keep it on," is the UTH on a timer?

The tile are 12"

I should have said wait and check it after another 4 hours. My plan is leave the UTH on 24 hours a day once we have Leo's in the tank.

I think I understand, you are trying to monitor your temps b4 your gecko arrives. Be careful as temps will probably riseabove safe levels with time. Do you have a thermostat. If you don't I highly recommend getting one.

I have one of the laser thermostats just point it at the spot and it gives you the temp. I hear they are better then the ones you just put the probe on the spot you want to test and leave it for a while.

checked it tonight after about 18 hours of it being on and same thing the center is 94 but edges are 85. And I can feel a big difference with my hand so I might need to work out something else fast.

The laser is a thermometer. A thermostat is a device you plug the UTH into in order to make sure the temperature in the tank does not rise above a safe level. You would program the thermostat to make the temp inside the tank to maintain a temp wherever the probe is about 90 degrees and then it will take away or add power to keep it that temperature.

The entire tile does not need to be hot. You need a spot that's about 2 by 4 inches with a hide over it where the gecko can warm it's belly. You should have more than one area and hide if you have more than one gecko in the same enclosure.

94-95 degrees at the hotspot is fine, it's quite perfect actually. You should be looking at having a UTH that covers 1/3 of your tank. If you have a nice warm area for the gecko to lay on, then that's good enough. Your gecko will likely move around to thermoregulate itself.

Having a thermostat is recommended because UTH can malfunction and get too hot. With a thermostat, it'll turn off the UTH if it ever gets above a certain threshold. You can get a non-proportional thermostat rather cheap, and you can leave the UTH on 24/7 without worry.

Thanks for the info. I was planning on doing the thermostat or at least a dimmer so I can keep the temp on the UTH right. But I wanted to see what the max was. Turns out its pretty close but still thinking of getting something.
