Lighting Question

Hello :) I am new to leopard geckos and will be getting one very soon. However, I want to have his terrarium all set up before I have him shipped.

I have almost most everything set up but my question is this:

i would like like to have a light over/by his tank so that I can see him better. Not for heat or anything, purely for aesthetics.

Is is this a terrible idea? If not, what kind of lighting would be best? Thank you!

In my opinion, if you want a light to help you see your gecko better, then any kind of light should be OK. My geckos are all in my living room and dining room so I just use the room light and it's fine. Some albino leopard geckos are a bit light sensitive, so keep that in mind. None of my albinos seem to mind the room lights when they're on.

You could get a daylight fluorescent to sit across the top of his tank, if you want. Something like a 5,000K tube light from any Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, etc. They're very inexpensive. You can get a fixture for it at the same place for $10 or so, especially if you only need it to stretch over a 10 or 20 gal tank. They produce no heat but it'll brighten up a cage superbly.

And then you might as well get a timer, so it switches on and off on its own. They're also available inexpensively everywhere.

My Leo is definitely sensitive to bright lights so I don't use one. IMO just leave a light on in the room if you want to provide light. I use a red light for additional heat since my house is on the colder side and it has the benefits of not bothering her and still allowing viewing in an otherwise completely dark room. BTW the purple, blacklight style, bulbs are worthless for viewing.
