Can I feed my gecko blood worms, or red trout worms?

Dirt Noun - 1. any foul or filthy substance, as mud, grime, dust, or excrement.

Rotting plant matter qualifies as dirt which is fed to the worms. I win now stop arguing.

3-4 worms for a baby geckos is not nearly enough. I have babies that will eat well over 10, and they are healthy, not obese. End of story :)

I say we stop hijacking now lol...

Find a scientific description and then we'll talk.

Pet store food

I bought some freezed dried worms at the pet store and real worms at the pet store and my gecko's eat both. Man I have tons of dried worms that will last months. Hey if I got from a pet store for gecko's then it is safe. I also bought live worms that move, from the pet store.
This works.

No offense, but stop trusting everything your petstore says.

First of all freeze-dried mealworms have practically no nutritional value. Live food is the best. I know you are purchasing live worms, and that is good, but that should be the staple... Not the freeze-dried worms with no nutritional value.

You'd be much better feeding your gecko(s) live mealworms (not earthworms), crickets, or roaches.... These are all acceptable feeders...

Pet stores often sell things that will kill your gecko. Substrates like calci-sand or bark or small pebbles all can potentially kill your gecko. Heats rocks which they sell will also badly burn your leo. Freeze dried worms offer a lot less nutrition than live gutloaded worms.

Leo nut, i wasnt making a scientific point. Your just assuming things and trying to start an argument even when im completely correct. Blood/trout worms EAT DIRT and offer little nutrition.

Ok, i'm really sick of arguing with you. I'm not going to post here anymore. THEY EAT THINGS IN THE DIRT, NOT THE DIRT ITSELF. If you would like to continue this i suggest you take to PM.

Worms

I do not know about worms. I have been looking to see what other things I can feed by Geckos and I have not seen anything that says worms can be used.

Worms do not eat Dirt.

They are high in protein and probably would be similar to a Pinky Mouse.

There are many places in the world that eat worms, as well as mealworms, as a part of their diet.

However, I think that one problem maybe with any parasites that may be inside of the worm.

So for that reason I would not just give my Geckos a worm.

Worms important questions

I do have a question. I have been feeding my gecko's the freezed dried worms, along with the meal worms that move. The problem is now my Gecko's are not eating, they wont even eat the live worms. They used to eat like pigs, now I see puke also, a little of it. I did stop feeding the worms from 7-11, although I never had any problems with those worms. I did notice since I have used the freeze dries worms, they have not been eating. I did get at the pet store.

If I throw in a moving worm they wont eat those. It says for reptiles.
Can these freezed dried worms make your gecko sick, if so I won't use anymore. Although it is winter and maybe they just not hungry. I don't know.

I've never heard of these being feeders for geckos, especially Leopard Geckos. They're in the freezer section? Does that mean you feed your geckos frozen mealies or do they come back after you have them out for a little while?

My 7-11 doesn't even have a gas station attached to it, lol You have a very interesting 7-11 :)
I've only known 7-11 as a gas station,lol!!

NOOOO its not normal and thats probably because you have been feeding them not only food from 7-11 but freeze dried food, holy crap your going to kill your geckos!! You talked about people working at a pet store well fine, I work at a very popular pet store and am a certified Pet Care Specialist and I can tell you that you need to take your geckos to the vet because the stuff you have been feeding (maybe not the meal worms cause I dont know how 7-11 takes care of them) has really harmed your geckos. If you wanted to hear it from someone who works at a pet store and owns leos than there you go. I'm sorry if this is harsh but I am worried about your leos life and your lack of research from GOOD sources before you bought them!

I can tell you that this is true I work at a very popular pet store and I know we sell stuff that would kill geckos and I wish we didn't sell it but luckily everyone who works there lets people know not to buy it

Hm. Earthworms ARE extremely nutritious.

From "Nutrient content of earthworms consumed by Ye'Kuana Amerindians of the Alto Orinoco of Venezuela"

Abstract
For the Makiritare (Ye'Kuana) native people of the Alto Orinoco (Venezuela), earthworms (Anellida: Glossoscolecidae) are an important component of the diet. Two species in particular are widely consumed: 'kuru' (Andiorrhinus kuru n. sp.) and 'motto' (Andiorrhinus motto). We analysed eviscerated kuru body proper, and whole and smoked preparations of motto for their content of protein and amino acids, fatty acids and 20 minerals and trace elements.

The samples contained large amounts of protein (64.5-72.9% of dry weight), essential amino acids, calcium and iron together with notable quantities of other important elements, indicating that these earthworms contain potentially useful quantities of many nutrients that are critical to the health of the humans who consume them.

See also http://www.earthwormvietnam.com/Eng/powdereng.htm

The Vietnamese worms DO have a calcium: phosphorus of less than 1:2, but so do mealies. I'm seeing a lot of knee-jerk negative response to the idea of earthworms as food, but perhaps they should be re-examined. Certainly, the much higher moisture content could prove to be an issue. There are a number of papers on nutritional analysis of earthworms, but I don't particularly feel like paying the $$$ to view them. Perhaps different species of earthworm have a better calcium/phosphate ratio.

This whole feeding geckos bait from 7-11 is making me a little queasy. I feel bad for this poor helpless gecko that can't fend for itself. Please bring it to a vet and see if it's OK. Then give it some calcium/vitamin coated crickets or mealworms.

Live bait at gas station stores is generally for catch and release fishing. I have a lot of fisherman in my family who won't even use gas station bait for that. You have no idea what parasites could be in those things.

Take it to a vet or see if its in shed. If it is then there is your answer. If it's not I cant help you. Not to be sounding mean or not, but your listening to the pet store workers and not even listening to us. We give you replies which information, but then some of your replies are just asking a question that has just been answered. It can also be a chance that your temperatures are too cold so they go into brumation. So please listen to US and have our opinion rather than having a petstore worker.

Dont blood-worms also bite, Im trying to remember back to my fishing days...last year in NC. I got my dad to bait these blood-worms because they could bite, and technically if you let them sit on you long enough they can burrow into your skin.

So I know this threads old/re-born but for future reference to anyone that reads this...DONT FEED YOUR LEO BLOODWORMS
