I don't use either with any kind of regularity. Butterworms are a bit out of my price range. Once a year or so I'll buy waxworms, but that's it.

In my experience yes butterworms have twice the ammount of calcium but are quite fatty, not as fatty as waxworms though, however both geckos love them, so for a halloween treat I am going for butterworms (they are a bit more expensive hence the treat) and I breed my own waxworms so they are avaliable all the time :)

I offer waxworms as a treat about once a month, 2-3 worms per gecko. I tried butterworms, but nobody would eat them.

i do order wax worms, there the mickeys D fast food, of the gecko world...really no nutritional value at all that i like i only use them to fatten up geckos and this is really the only good thing there for...

Butterworms, i will no even try they are Made sterile by the U.S before coming in to the states...Not very confident using them...However...

Am a Huge supporter for Phoenix worms, there prices are reasonable for there great values and raving views they tend to get with Geckos all my leopard geckos Love them and there calcium level is amazing. and there low in fat.

Both feeders work well for there own needs, weather it is to fatten up or get lots of calcium in them. i choose Both!

PREY WORMS, ahhhhh yes

I never have fed butter worms.
I never have fed Phoenix worms.
I have seen the very high & balanced,
calcium to phosphorus ratio on the phoenix.
Good of course if regulated some way.
Keep in mind a gecko licking calcium from
a bowl does it as it feels it needs it.
Have you ever seen a gecko object to a
calcium dusted worm?
I have. The taste is not preferred.
Feeding Phoenix worms really gives it
no choice on calcium intake.
Its basic instinct is food for survival.
I'm not running down feeding them....
just a need to round out the diet.......

.....Now the non nourished wax worm
is a bit of an opinion here........
I agree if fed straight from the supplier
you are supplying strickly treat food.
Fat created from raising them on honey
and bran usually.
They publish that wax worm adults do not
eat........
Wrong!.....
Nourishment value comes from
us
feeding our wax worms,
high value supplemented food.
I do my wax worms the same as the
meal worms I feed.
Also the same for crickets that are fed
occasionally but mainly for activity,
to escape gecko depression
caused from the easy
confined, limited space, life.
"May the force of each chosen opinion
result in a healthy gecko." (hjr)
Take care. HJ

I will give my gecko waxworms occasionally. I have never tried butterworms. They are expensive, and nobody sells them locally.

Wax worms do have a nutritional value.

Wax worms can an should be used for more than just a treat.

Wax worms are not addictive.

Wax worms are not the "fast food" or "twinkie" for leopard geckos.

Wax worms do not cause fatty liver disease.

They should not be used as a staple diet but they should be offered as a part of their diet... Even a few wax worms once a week is perfectly fine... Moderation is the key...

My geckos love both of the worms. If you're in the US - I've not had issues with the price of GeorgiaCrickets' butterworms - they're not much more expensive than a waxworm 50 ct for 15 of them :3 I plan to get a couple of both for Halloween as well, since I'm getting going on my mealworm colony now.

I heard waxworms were high in vit a. I think everything in moderation is a good rule to live by.

I give neither very often. My Leo eats Supers and Mealies with Silkworms and Crickets rotated in every once in a while.

The 2 times I bought Butterworms for Gaia she ate 3 of them the first night and then she wouldn't eat for like 3 or 4 days (which isn't normal) so I can only imagine they didn't make her feel too good. I ended up having to get rid of the rest of the Butterworms because she refused to eat them after the first 3 she ate.
As for Waxworms I've never given them to her so I don't even know if she likes them, lol.

I would personally love to hear/see evidence/sources that support this. I have never heard of waxworms being promoted like this, every forum I've ever been on is in agreement that they are the McDonalds of the reptile world, and every herp vet I've been to is strongly against feeding them as more than just a treat. I've looked up the nutritional value of them and they rank right near the bottom when it comes to all major feeders. I only ever offer them as treat, but not to my Leos. I will feed butterworms though as they are better nutritionally and can be fed with some regularity as part of a varied diet.
