Is there a way I can feed my gecko non living food?

:main_robin:I am living in a dorm room at the moment and am not technically allowed to have a leopard gecko, and am very far away from a pet store. I want to have a leopard gecko soon but in my situation it would be very difficult to have any live insects in my dorm room for any extended period of time without someone noticing. So I was wondering if there is any possible way I could feed the leopard gecko something not alive, while keeping it a healthy and happy gecko. Ive been told that even if it would be difficult to get the gecko to eat it if I mixed baby food and the leopard gecko food powder it would get the nutrients it needed, but I don't know if that is correct.

Help?!:main_huh:

The powder you are thinking of is for crested geckos, not leopards. You can try the canned insects that are available, but I doubt you will have much success, movement is almost always necessary to invoke a feeding response.

Agreed. Leopard geckos need live food. If you want to keep a gecko and have a problem with live feeders, I'd consider getting a crested gecko instead. They can live quite well on prepared Crested Gecko Diet.

You could keep meal worms in you drawer, just make sure that they do not get any mold in the wheat bran and that you change the carrot or potato daily.

I would not recommend canned food. My first leo I got was feed canned food and he was extremely drab and skinny. I bought him saturday night from the guy and the pets stores where I lived where all closed sunday. As soon as I could I was over at the pet store monday purchasing meal worms.

I keep my meal worms, super worms, and crickets all on chicken mash the only smell from them is the chicken mash which smells like beer.

The keeping meal worms would not be the best option for me cause my current roommate does not like bugs of any sort ...heh :( Has anyone had any success with one of the vibrating dishes? and also if I were to use the dry food would dusting it with the vitamins give my gecko enough nutrition?

How is feeding the dry food any different than using live bugs?

All food for leopard geckos is just freeze dried insects. They say that the process locks in the nutrition, but then what do they put in it to help with shelf life? I have never seen the cans or bottles in a freezer like they have for freeze dried fish foods.

Anything that is powder form I have not heard of that you mix up I have not heard of.

Will the gecko eat it, yes, my gecko's previous owner just left a few of the canned crickets in a dish and he ate them when he felt like it. I must tell you though that crickets stink worse in the can then they do if they die on you from the pet store. My gag reflex was going with the canned crickets it stunk so bad.

It costs about $3 for 100 mealworms, and if kept properly they do not stink and 100 mealworms lasts me about a week feeding them to 2 of my leopard geckos and they eat until they are full each time.

As for housing the mealworms, I keep 1000 meal worms in a 6 qt sterilite shoe box sized container, I haven't had any problems with any dying off. I keep them with about 1.5" of chicken mash and use water gel crystals for a water source, that I place in a 2 oz souffle cup lid on top of the mash.

I don't see why your roommate has to know about the mealies. If you keep them in a drawer then she doesn't have to see them. If she is freaked out when you feed the gecko, she can leave until the feeding is over.
Geckos can eat dried food, but it will be very difficult to entice it, especially if the gecko was raised on live food.
