Some leopard geckos seem to know when they have infertile eggs and lay them outside the box. Others just get stupid about where they put their eggs. Since they can dig in the sand, that may be why they're laying them there. I highly recommend you replace the sand with something like paper towel or ceramic tile so the only thing the gecko can dig in is the lay box. When you feel she's going to lay eggs soon, just keep putting her in the lay box and hope she gets the idea.

Yes it can be. My girl lays her eggs every 11 days but I believe she lays them quicker than the average gecko does. If you can pick her up you should be able to tell when there are eggs in her belly too
