Deformities?

Was unsure if this should go in ethics or breeding but... here you go.



So we have kink tails, eyelids, nostrils and cleft lip (not sure if the cleft lip thing is just a more advanced nostril deformity).

From my understanding what is widely accepted is...

Tail kinks - Temp. Flux and/or genetic.
Eyelids - Temp. Flux and/or vitamin A deficiency in mother.
Nostrils and cleft lip (can find hardly any information on both of these).

Some will breed geckos with tail kinks and have had no ill effects. I have talked to a few breeders (some very well known) and they do breed geckos with tail kinks.
I have seen several threads and websites about eyelid deformities. Most have and will bred geckos with eyelid deformities (having no effects again).
Once again almost no info on nostrils/cleft lip.

What are your opinions and experience on breeding geckos with these kinds of deformities?:main_robin:

I have noticed that threads like these can get off hand... If someone says something that goes against what you would do... BE AN ADULT ABOUT IT.

I personally don't breed any with tail kinks just incase it wasn't from incubation. It's just me though. If it's a minor issue and the breeder I purchased from told me that it wasn't genetic, I might breed the gecko then.

Every breeder experiences these types of deformities at some time or another. I do not believe eyelid deformities are genetic, so I would probably not worry too much about breeding geckos with this problem. As far as tail kinks, I beleive in most cases it is genetic... especially with Murphy patternless. There are cases where it is obvious the kink was due to how it grew in the egg. I have hatched a couple of geckos with cleft upper lips, but have never bred one.

As a general rule I do not breed ANY gecko with a deformity, and usually sell them or adopt them out as "pets only".
