Question about my eggs!

I have 4 eggs going now, two were laid a couple weeks ago and the other two are on day 38 now. The older eggs have become very soft in the last couple days, even softer than when they were brand new it seems. Ive been reading a lot about the eggs lately but want to get some more opinions.

We have 3 geckos now, two males(kaida and oreo) which are seperated and one female(sheila). We are going for females with the eggs so we can get a mate for our third wheel, kaida. So they have been kept at right around 80 Degrees farenheit. Ive heard that the lower temps cause longer incubation times and that the shortest time is usually around 40 days, which is why I am concerned. It is day 38 as I said earlier, and they are very soft. Is this because they are getting ready to hatch(which seems early to me)? Or should I be worried about them?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

They may be infertile or bad, but you can't be sure just yet. If you're incubating at 80 the eggs should be hatching around 60 days I believe. You may want to candle the eggs to check if they are fertile. But don't quit incubating untile they stink, explode, or are bad beyond all doubt. Babies hatch out of very strange eggs on occasion! Also, if they are your geckos first clutch, they have a higher chance of being infertile... Good luck and I hope you get nice hard eggs from your geckos soon!

I have candled them and they are a good pink color and have a dark mass inside of them that definitely looks like a little gecko in there, the eggs are soft but not dented and when you touch them to feel the softness they do not dent. Im pretty sure they are fertile, and it is our geckos second clutch of the year(the first one was 2 infertile eggs). I keep the humidity around 80-85. They have also grown some, and are considerably larger than the newer eggs.

Not sure what exactly is going on, im pretty sure they arent dead, but they also shouldnt be ready to hatch yet. Maybe Im just being paranoid. This is the first time I have tried breeding any reptiles, and Ive been doing a lot of research to make sure that I get everything right lol. Ive quite literally read everything I could find about every aspect of the breeding process for these geckos. Hopefully Ill be able to get at least one little one this year!

Well good luck! It doesnt sound ready to hatch to me if thats what they look like while candeling. When an egg is about to hatch and you candle it, they seem to be solid black or super dark red. Just keep incubating beyond all doubt! Good luck, and I hope that you have as successful of a first season as me!

keep us posted :D

At 82-83 my geckos hatch out between 58-62 days. So 38 would be very early for you incubating at 80. Now I have eggs that seem soft to me to and not hatched than hatched right on scheduled. Now if they were dented I would be concerned that your humidity was to low but your just about on the money with it. So I would say its just the first time jitters we and have been there at some point. I think they will be just fine. If you have any more concerns feel free to ask and I hope every thing go's well for you.

Oh! Sorry I see the 80 degrees now. I would agree with Kjenkins -last season I incubated at 81 and had a 60-64 day incubation length with all but a few eggs. At 38 days something is going on unless your thermometer could be off?

Well, I think it was just a little paranoia because its day 50 now and we have two little hatchlings! I added a little more water to the perlite and buried the eggs a little deeper and the softness went away after a couple more days. This is our first time breeding and our leopard geckos first year laying eggs. She laid two that were infertile and we got two little hatchlings from her second clutch of the year, not bad for her first time haha!!

These are some pics of the new babies, one hatched on saturday(day 47) and the other hatched on sunday(day 48). They look really healthy and are very energetic little things. We are just waiting to find that little turd in each cage to start feeding them lol!! We got four more eggs with a different father incubating now, hopefully well have as much luck with them as we have with these two! Thanks for your help guys, without it we probably wouldnt have these little guys(or girls hopefully)..

Yay glad to see they're alive and healthy! Congrats!

For the others, what kind of incubation medium, water ratio, and container are you using? Ratios and air tight containers are important to prevent the eggs from being too wet or too dry :)
