Some Incubator Questions

So I've been doing some research on Inubators, and I'd like to spend under $150 for one, which is why I'm leaning towards the Hova Bator 2362N model from LLL reptiles. They have pricier versions, but I don't need a big window. It has a fan built in.

Do I need to use a thermostat for it like I would a heat pad? Would a hydrofarm thermostat be okay? It tends to go up or down 2 degrees.

Or am I okay to plug it in and use the built-in thermostat wafer thing? With a thermometer of course.

If this is a bad incubator, are there other better ones you guys swear by that would be in my price range? I'm hesitant to make my own :/

I'm leaning towards Hatch Rite as an egg substrate, as I've heard good things like it's less maintenance. Yay or nay? Holes or no holes in the containers? Does that depend on the substrate?

Thanks for any input!

I use the hovabator without a fan. The fan can make it difficult to get the temps below 90 degrees. Thermostat is a must with these though. They don't have to be super fancy, but they have to be reliable. As for hatch rite, I used it with great success this year, and you just put the eggs in it. If you use hatchrite, definately no air holes though! I hope this helps!

Check out the ZooMed incubator as well. As I understand it, it's very much like the hobovator but already has a decent proportional thermostat, which is why it's more expensive. It's essentially the same price as a hobovator plus a proportional thermostat.

Thanks Dinosaur! You did help ^^ If I get the zoo med reptibator, do I not need an external thermostat? I found it for only $100 on amazon, woo!

I am pretty sure the reptibator has a proportional thermostat built in. To be sure, go to the zoomed website and read the specs.

Oh, I see, I thought you knew about it from someone or something. I've been hoping for some feedback from people who use it but this section of the forum is pretty dead :/ Sure I can read specs anywhere as I've been doing, but experience would be better. Thank you anyway!
