I'm using the reptipro5000 and I don't know if the 6000 has fixed the one bug I find with it: when the ambient temperature changes dramatically, the incubator doesn't always keep up. So if there's a heat wave, the temp can go up even though the programmed display doesn't change. I had a big problem with it this year which I believe led to a higher rate of mild deformities (tail kinks, back leg problems). The solution is to put a small digital thermometer with probe in the egg container and check it twice a day. Maybe the 6000 will be better. In general, it's done well by me.

The 6000 claims to be be able to cool as well as heat to hold the temp. Is the 5000 the same? For the price I may give it a shot and have my hovabator on standby warmed up.

Yes, both the 5000 and the 6000 cool as well as heat. That's why I got mine since I would have to move the hobovator down to the basement in the summer since I don't have AC. You should know that there have been many companies making mini-fridge based incubators for about the same price and they all look the same. I have been assuming that they all get the shell from the same place and have designed their own "guts" but I don't know for sure. The exo-terra incubator is similar but has gotten even worse reviews. If you so a search on the forum for reptipro you'll see some of the stuff I posted about it when I first got it.

Thanks Aliza, I read a bunch of posts. Kind of makes me want to attemp a DIY. Maybe look for a display fridge with a broken cooling unit. Hmmmm.... the possibilities lol

I made an incubator out of styrofoam box (with my father) and I tested it, and it seemed it works. I have a heat pad with water bottles to "spruce" up the heat. Is this a good idea?

I've seen them with water bottles inside. I can only assume that would help keep the temperature consistent once the wateis brought up to temp.

Aliza thats a great read. The more I'm investigating the more I want to try to build it.
