Opinions on Air Holes for Egg Containers?

Well I've seen people do it both ways, so I know both work. Of course, as an anxious beginner, I want to know what everyone thinks will work best.

Right now I have two options; I have deli cups with air holes in the top. The air holes are covered with a gauze-like material. I also have a plastic shoe-box with no air holes. I'd like to use the plastic shoe-box because it gives me more space to put eggs, but I feel nervous about not having air holes.

What does everyone prefer and why?

I have done well with no air holes , opening the container up every week very briefly for air exchange.

Yea, you don't really need an air hole as long as you pop open a corner occassionally. Or you can poke one or two needle holes in the lid and that is usually enough. You just don't want to lose humidity by having too much air exchange all the time.

Okay, thanks, guys. I decided to go with no air holes because I live in a desert and humidity is extremely hard to maintain here.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my incubator, though. The first time I put it together(I made it out of a Styrofoam cooler), the water started to turn a funny color and smell, so I took it apart and sanitized everything with rubbing alcohol. I threw out my vermiculite and started with fresh stuff. I used vinyl gloves that I rubbed down with alcohol to make sure I wasn't transferring anything weird into my incubator. I cooked the brick I'm using in the oven for an hour and soaked the fish tank heater(it was used to heat a fish tank at one point) in hot water and vinegar. Yet, after setting it up again, the water is still starting to change color. I have a pump running in it to keep it from being stagnant. Any advice? I don't want to start a bacteria farm in my reptile room.
