Hi This is my first year of breeding leopard geckos and I want to make sure incubation goes right. I know you fill your container with medium. This year I'm using hatch rite.then you weigh it. What ever it weighs you multiply the weight by 0.8. What ever is the number you add it to the weight of the medium of the container. The final number you get on your calculator you add as much water until the medium in the container reaches the weight you need. Is this correct?

And is this enough medium in a container that low?

My first year too, but i think you left out a step. When using a ratio, you subtract the weight of the container before multiplying x. 8, right?? and your substrate needs to be deep enough that any possible standing water at the bottom does NOT TOUCH THE EGGS. In my GEO kit deli cups, there is a gap of air between the substrate and the geo egg rack, eo i dont know how much substrate depth to recommend if the egg touches the substrate. :0

Hatchrite is as dry as a bone. And I've seen and heard about breeders still adding water to it with no problem.

I would test it first. When I first opened my bag I thought "this won't work, there is no moisture". So I put about 2 inched in a small zip lock container and put it in the incubator, and 1 day later I had plenty of condensation on the sides and lid of the container. Test it first with no water, you might be surprised.

My 1st eggs are still incubating. Day 36, they look good, plump, no denting, and I have maintained a good amount of humidity without adding any water.

I do the ratio when using perlite. it should be total weight of perlite (minus the weight of the container if you can't tare your scale first) x .8 = amount of water you add. I've never used hatchrite but in theory you shouldn't need to add any water. Either way (ratio or hatchrite) the substrate should feel fairly dry. If it looks damp chances are you'll kill your eggs with too much water. The idea of testing it to see if there's condensation sounds like a great one!
