Hatchlings

How are hatchlings cared for in the wild? Do the mothers provide a home, bring food, protect babies from predators, teach them to hunt? Are they nurtured in any way? What is their early life like? Just curious :)

The eggs are abandoned after laying. The babies pop out of the egg ready to go, they don't need to be taught how to hunt and receive no parental care or protection. Quite the opposite actually, leopard geckos are cannibalistic and will consume their own offspring if given the chance.

I think Armadillo lizards are the only ones (reptiles) that care for their young and stay together when they're older :) I've been thinking about getting a pair of these recently :p

croc skinks do as well. actually both parents will guard the egg and the hatchling until removed.

We just recently got an armadillo lizard. They are really cool but not the type to be handled much. He has though been a great addition to our collection as he is great fun to watch with all his acrobatics!

king cobras will also deffend their nest untill the babies hatch. and yes i said nest...they actually pile leaves into a dome type nest and lay their eggs inside and viciously deffend them! it is really cool.

i also actually had a female crested gecko bite the crap outta me when i took her eggs from her. she was guarding them! i have produced probably a hundred or so cresteds, and this is the only female i ever had that would not lay and leave! pretty funny! i actually made a video, if i can dig it up i will post it, she would make little noises and everything...quite comical
