What species should I get?

Hello. I am looking for a first pet gecko and I'm wondering what type to get. I really like the cresteds, but I want something bigger and I'm afraid they might lose their tail. I was looking at the New Caledonian Giants, but they are hard to find and a little out of my range. Any suggestions on what to get? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to GF. Geckos do not lose their tails as readily as some people think. They are pretty resilient. The leachianus geckos can be quite expensive, often starting at about $300. That doesn't seem likely to change any time soon. Take a look at gargoyle geckos. They are about the size of cresteds but seem somewhat chunkier. In my opinion, even though there are a lot of lovely names for crested gecko morphs, most of them are . . . brown. The gargoyles come in a variety of stripe colors and blotchy patterns. Bigger geckos are going to be more expensive geckos, so consider something of crestie/gargoyle size.
