So today we just picked up an adult leopard gecko, the person we got it from said it was a male but we are not sure because its kind of iffy but can't get the best picture at the moment because he is very squirmy.

What we are wondering is his coloring...we aren't sure if its dirt or part of his coloring. When we got him and we looked at the, what we thought was dirt, felt tacky and when giving him a bath some seemed to come off but not much and we didn't want to irritate him too much because he looked like he was going to be shedding, which come to find out he is. That is another thing, under his shed the dark splotches are still there but lighter in color.

Here is a picture of him I just took, so don't mind the shedding xD IMG_20140716_240242_940 (1).jpg

Unfortunately, it looks like your new gecko hasn't been receiving the best of care. He appears to be missing all his toes, likely lost during bad sheds, and is a bit thin. This could certainly be affecting his color. I would not bother trying to wash him off. Instead, concentrate on making sure he has a nutritious diet of gutloaded insects with proper supplementation of vitamins and calcium/D3. Also, be certain to provide a humid hide for shedding and check his toes for stuck shed. I think with time and good care, you will see his color brighten up on its own.

Here are some caresheets I think are good, but let us know if you have any questions:

Poor thing has lost all his toes. Glad he is in the hands of someone who is doing research to give him the proper care, looks like he has had a rough life

To answer your original question, his color is likely strange looking(The dark smears and the faded yellow) because he is malnourished. After a while of getting proper food and supplements, his color will go back to normal.

Yeah our poor little guy isnt in the best shape. He has a warm hide a cool hide and a moist hide which he has already thoroughly checked out. Today he will be having yummy gut loaded crickets and some worms. I'll just have to wait to see his real colors, it will be a surprise!I told my self when we went to get him not to bring home any more rescues as we have a baby in pretty bad shape already that we are caring for...but i couldnt leave him there in that shape. Darn adorable animals demanding proper care. :pThank you for the info and fast replys guys. I really appreciate it.:)Once he is done shedding I'll post an update on him.

Alright sorry its been a bit, my keybord was messed up and i had to find a new one. Anyways, Mavrick is doing great so far gaining weight, not sure how much as i dont have a scale but i'm going to be ordering one soon. He still seems to be confused about the fact that he is sopose to be noctornal...hes always moving around during the day and sleeping though most of the night.

Ari, our other rescue is doing well as well, she is now eating on her own for the most part, i have to leave her with a bunch of worms in a pile for her to find them as she still cant see very well. I took her to the vet, and they removed some debrise that was in her eyes, gave me some fake tears to put in her eyes every day and now she is actualy opening them and reacting to light. When we first got her she bairly opened them wouldnt walk around unless scared wouldnt eat or drink. She has came out of her den and drank water on her own she also shed.

First two are of Mavrick right after his shed, last is of Ari.

He looks much happier now! To me he looks to be a normal that has dulled due to improper care. Which is ironic, because I have a semi-rescue normal male named Maverick also! I got him last year from a neighbor who kept him with no heat, no supplements, and food once a week (only like four crickets. And he was still a juvenile.). Not to mention that he was Dyed blue from the two inches of neon blue calci sand he was on! But now he is a big ol' fatty who loves his food, and has fathered many hatchlings this year :) I can tell that your guys story will end just as well! He will do great in your care!

Go team Maverick! ;) (I know, yours is spelled different, but whatever :D )

So Maverick is the fat one to the right, he is doing so much better and he is a pig when it comes to eating. His coloring is definitely improving, his orange is showing more and more.

Just wanted to update y'all on how he has been doing.
