In the comment section a reader says that Ray forgot to suggest a moist hide and ray says they are not necessary. I have moist hides/lay boxes in all of my enclosures, including those that house only males. Who follows ray's advice and does not use moist hides? What do you do to ensure proper shedding?

In Ray's book ("The Leopard Gecko Advisor") he suggests that the gecko be monitored for early signs of shedding and then a temporary humid area provided by putting a moist paper towel in the hide.
I don't know whether a humid hide is necessary or not, but since it seems simple enough to provide it, I do for my geckos. On the other hand, I just retrieved a gecko that had been living in my basement for 2 years (story coming out in Gecko Time on Tuesday) who shows no signs of any shedding difficulties, and no humid hide was provided.

I would always use a humid hide. Just remember that anyone can write a care book. Trust what you know and you'll be good. There are a lot of breeder care sheets out there that you can follow, too. Don't just follow what one person does and kind of try to look at everything that has been done by breeders in general.

It's also possible that some people have higher humidity where it might not be needed. But even in IL where humidity is high, mine need it or there are major shedding issues.
