Final hours/ grieving

This is sorta just me venting about what's going on with one of my Leo's

Hopefully my baby girl is comfortable. She’s still hanging on, but not by much. Nala has the absolute best personality I’ve ever seen any leopard gecko have and there will never be another like her. Every time someone would come into my room, other than myself, she would come to the front of the tank and watch that person intently. When she still could she would put both of her front paws up on the glass like a puppy looking out the window. For anyone who thinks reptiles are just pets you keep in tanks with no personality or loyalty, you obviously have not seen my Nala look at you with her big grey eyes and smile. I’m going to miss that little smile so much.

Is there anything I can do to make sure she is comfortable? Should I have her with me (obviously keeping her still) or leave her in her tank. I have 6 Leo's right now but I have never lost one. I'm just not sure what to do, especially after also. When a fish dies, you just flush it. Obviously you cannot (and I would not) do that with Nala. Any ideas or experience with this?

Rather than waiting for a hopeless cause. There is a nice way of euthanising a leopard gecko painlessly. Like you do on fish or any cold blooded animals who are going thru a very hard times ( for the animal and it's owner ). I would wrap the leo in a wet paper towel put it inside a appropriate size sandwich bag and placed it in the freezer. This will be painless for your pet and in 5 minutes it will be all over. you can then bury the leo after it's done. I believe that it is more humane this way. Hope this helps ease the grief.

Thanks for the help, I had to go to work for a few hours. If when I get home she is still breathing I might go for that option. I don't know if I would be able to put her in the freezer =/

So sorry. I know what your going threw I just lost my green tree python whom I had since a hatchling and over 15 years. I like to bury all my animals in my back yard to keep them close to me. I think your going about it right cause no one should die alone. My condolences

There are many opinions on weather the freezer method is painless. Most say to cool in refrigerator first then move to freezer

Thank you for your condolences. I'm sorry to hear about your Python, I'm sure it had a great life. Unfortunately my lawn/yard is landscaped to a T. I live with a not so animal friendly family who would literally snap if I were to take a shovel to our grass. I was thinking maybe a park but I'm not sure if that's legal.

Any woods near you? Or you could bury in a mulched area if you have one without your parents knowing or disturbing the lawn.

IMO, there is enough evidence that the freezer method is extremely painful to them that I would not risk it... The only methods of euthanasia I would use are lethal injection and instant destruction of the brain.

So sorry for your loss. =(

So sorry. It's tough when you get to the point of not being able to do anything to help a beloved pet. As mentioned, you can certainly seek out a vet to humanely euthanize her.

I usually bury in my yard, although I have had a few larger pets cremated (my vet recommended a facility).

Thanks for all the help everyone, she passed last night some time before 7. I put her in a ziplock bag in the freezer until I have a day I can dig up some mulch and bury her there (most likely a day the family isn't home).

This is correct. Never put them directly into the freezer. The fridge will put them in a cold coma. They need to be there for at least 4-6 hours before the freezer. Some don't agree with this method, but it's what older breeders mentioned using in the past.

I'm so sorry for your gecko.

I'm so sorry for your loss I just lost one of my leos recently too and it's definitely a very difficult thing to go through. You know what though? They're both up in the big desert paradise in the sky happier then they could ever be here :) So mourn for now but you should come to be happy knowing she's in a better place.

Absolutely, at least I know if she was in any pain she isn't any more. It was sad losing her, but her suffering would be selfish on my part so overall I am happy/relieved for her
