Fire Near My Home!

There is a 70+ acre fire burning about 20 miles from my house! I'm actually thinking about getting ready to pack up my reptiles just in case we have to leave. Don't even get me started on moving all of our horses and dogs and sheep.

I really hope it is contained soon. =( I've never had a fire so close to where I live.

The fire is still burning and getting bigger. It has now burned 2000 acres of forest and has moved a few miles closer to us so it just 16 miles away. They've done a mandatory evacuation of a community just 8 miles from us. There is so much smoke that it always looks like sunset. At this point, I'm ready to start the evacuation at any time. If anybody has done this before, I would really value some tips because it's going to be really hard. With luck, maybe they will get it under control before it reaches us. I really, really hope so.

To make matters worse, one of our beloved horses died suddenly two night ago. He was so young and healthy. It's been a hard week. =(

We're officially evacuated. All I have to say is oh. my. god. It was so hard. I know this doesn't have much to do with geckos, but I just need to say it. It was the most exhausting thing I've ever done. 20+ sheep, 4 horses, 6 dogs, 1 cat, a plethora of reptiles. I'm so wrecked right now.

In the midst of the chaos, one of my eggs hatched. How funny.

Anyways, there is a high chance my house is going to burn down, so yeah... Really not sure what to do with everything.

My leopard geckos are still in travel bins, and that is just the way they're going to have to be until tomorrow. I'm so mentally and physically exhausted, I just don't have the energy to deal with them.

So I've had a really great week.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. Whereabouts are you? I live in ontario an I heard all about the fort mcmurray fire. I'm sorry I don't have any help. I can offer emotional support and let you rant on me. Feel free to message me if you would like to talk. I'm glad you are safe. I'm so sorry about your home. And about your horse, I saw your goodbye to Tristen. Horses are such beautiful majestic animals I couldn't imagine losing one. Stay safe.

Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate them. These last few days really have been so hard. I'm in New Mexico. It's the Dog Head Fire threatening my home. It's grown to 12,000 acres and is classified as a type one fire. The governor has declared a state of emergency, so it is pretty bad.

And thank you for your words about Tristen. That was one of the worst things I've ever been through. So sad.

I have another hard decision to make, and that is whether or not to continue incubating my eggs if I lose my house. I'm not sure I have any business bringing more geckos into the world when I don't have a house to keep them in. I hope so much that my house will be okay, but if it is not I may have to consider freezing the rest of my eggs for the season...

BTW, I'm sorry to the mods for posting a pretty off-topic thing. I feel really connected to this forum and wanted to reach out to the people here during this hard time. I hope you don't mind.

That's incredible. The fire here in Canada was the worst in history for Alberta as it was I believe over 500,000 acres at it's peak 6 weeks ago. Fires are so different in each place though it's crazy. I hope your home is ok. Where are you staying? It's all up to preference if you want to keep the eggs, but if the fire doesn't destroy the house there's still a possibility it'll be dangerous to return to for months. I'm just going off of what I read from the fort mcmurray fire so I can't be sure. I live on ontario and we rarely get wildfires. You are in my thoughts, I wish the best for you! Keep me updated.

Thank you, everyone. =) The fire is now 46% contained and the evacuation in my area has been lifted! Now I can go home to a not-burned-down house! It's gonna be a chore to move everything back, but I will be so happy to be back.

Thanks! =D I'm also very relieved. Everything is settled down now. All of the animals are back as of yesterday and it rained a whole bunch, so there shouldn't be any more danger.

The fire burned 20-something square miles of national forest (torched one of my favorite places around here, actually) and burned 24 homes. Now they are worried about floods because we're getting crazy rain now (the weather in New Mexico is very bipolar sometimes. Around here we say you often experience all 4 seasons in one day!), but we are far enough away that we don't need to worry about flooding.

Oh that is awful :( up here we've experienced all 4 seasons in a week actually recently too xD I'm so sorry your favourite place is gone. The saying is that free a fire a forest will grow 4x denser. Let's hope for that :)

Thanks! :D

Here are some pictures of the fire from my house. These sites definitely scared the crap out of us.

That's all smoke, there was not a cloud in the sky that day:

This one is at night. I know it is super blurry, but it gets the point across:
