I bought bearded dragon as an adult because I know babies are a little frail. my partner's cousin about two baby bearded dragons and they both died. any who, is there a preference with leopard geckos? are babies fragile too? should I get an adult?

I would not recommend getting tiny leopard gecko babies that still have their solid body bands and are only 3" long. Any well-started juvenile of 15 grams or above should be healthy and hardy. I'd recommend getting one from a breeder or a reptile specialty store as opposed to a large chain pet store.

luckily there is a pet store just a town over about 25 minutes away. I've never seen baby leopard geckos there. usually people sell them their unwanted pets. I have my eye on a one that's about 5 and half to 6 inches in length. Is that alright or do you think its still too young? before you buy the animal though they ask you all kinds of questions trying to figure you out. I already told them I don't plan on breeding any geckos.

That sounds like a reasonable size and it's good the pet store is somewhat selective with gecko buyers.
