Hi. I am planning to get a one 1 year old male and two 9-15 month old females (big enough to breed) in May or June. I want to breed them. If I start putting them together in June (or July) will they still breed or is it too late in the season? Will I need to wait until NEXT february? Will they lay some eggs but not as many as if I started in February? I cant seem to find a clear answer to this anywhere. Thank you!!!!

It's not so much a question of whether or not they will breed. A male will usually try to breed with a female if put together with them, but if the females aren't ovulating, you won't actually get many fertilized eggs. And what can happen if she is not ready to mate, if the male approaches her to breed, she might get aggressive (lay of bro! ;)) If you are new to breeding, you should definitely wait until next February.

I have bred a female that late once. She did seem to lay quite a few less eggs.

My personal advice would be to spend the year preparing and then be fully ready when breeding season comes around next time. It's usually best to have everything in order before the season starts. It's also a great opportunity to read more about it and gather all the supplies you could need. But if you are dead-set on doing it this season, it would likely be possible. You would probably just get less eggs. It also depends on the individual females' ovulatory cycles.

I've had a couple of occasions where I either got a male late in the season, or had a female that hatched the previous summer and I needed to wait until she was old and big enough to breed. In both cases, I actually didn't put them together till August or so and I got a few clutches. It's a good idea to start small anyway, so I'd say go for it. Just be sure to quarantine them if they're coming from different places.
