Juvenile leopard geckos

I was going to buy a juvenile albino leopard gecko today at my local pet store but when I asked if I could hold it, the leopard gecko tried to bite me when i put my hand in. I was not sure if this was because he was startled or what but he was not a happy camper. Once I took him out and held him, he was always trying to get out of my hands. My question is if the leopard gecko will grow out of that stage as it gets older and with more handling? I did not buy the gecko today because i wanted to ask this question.

Most leopard geckos with time and handling will calm down and let you hold them. If you buy from a breeder near you instead of the Pet Store, I would pretty much guerantee the leopard will calm down. I thought I would just put that option out there for you.

I had a leopard gecko for 7 yrs. before my cat got it while we were on vacation ( he knocked off the tank and I never found my gecko again :( ). He never had any problems with me holding him thats why I was reluctant with this one.

theres no such list unfortunately...theres a reptile show in morehead, ky this coming weekend...i doubt thats close enough for you to drive to get one though...honestly with gas prices now unless you can find a breeder in indy or wait til the next indy show your better off just paying the shipping to get one from a breeder on this site..there are several with wonderful animals that are very easy to handle might i add.

Some of my geckos don't like to be handled as well, but I think it's ok. The only time I have to handle them is when I want to clean the entire tank and that three times a years, so... Besides, reptiles are (like fish) no cuddling animals; you would take a fish out of the tank to hug it would you? When an animal bites me I'm happy to notice it's a healthy gecko that still is able to defend itself!

Greets,

That's very true, there's nothing wrong with their own basic instincts! My male mack snow is actually very calm and mellow, but sometimes he thinks he needs to protect his females, and he goes after my fingers lol.

It just really bothers me when I have a gecko that freaks out every time I open the cage (I have one that literally runs across the entire cage everytime). And I really do enjoy sitting down for a few minutes and handling all of my geckos, even if it's just for a few moments (I wish I could let them walk around on the floor, but we have cats, and I won't even let them wander around on the floor in their own reptile room)
