Which airlines allow Geckos?/If not, does anybody want to adopt some leopard geckos?

Hi everyone!

I'm sorry my first post on this forum has to be so serious and urgent but I am indesperate need of help. About 8-10 months ago I bought some leopard geckos. I LOVE them both and they are so beuatiful. Recently my circumstances have changed and I need to move to Canada from the USA for a new job. I really wanted to take my geckos with me but so far the two main airlines which fly from Washington DC to Montreal (United and Air Canada) do not allow geckos to be brought on the plane as carry on (even if they are in secure containers). Does anybody know of any other airlines which I may have a better chance of getting my geckos on board?

If I can't find one then my only other option is to find someone willing to buy them from me and that would break my heart but I can't just leave them behind. Is anyone out there interestd in two young healthy leaopard geckos? Both are female. I would sell them both for $10 each. I would even be willing to throw in a 10 gallon tank for FREE! I'll try and post pics of them later. Just one word of caution, one of the females is a little aggressive so you may want to keep her isolated. ( I keep them both in seperate tanks).

The onloy other thing is that i don't own a car so if anybody wants they will have to come pick them up. I live in Germantown, MD.

I have also investigated the option of sending them via LIVE animal cargo but the prices are just ridiculous!

I hope someone here can recommend an airline because I really don't want to part with them.

Thanks!:main_thumbsup:

Ok Here are the pics. The one with way more spots is named Sangria and the one with fewer spots is named Tequila! Aren't they adorable! I love them both so much. The one with more spots is the more aggressive one, you can actually see her starting to sway her tail in one pic. Weird since she is the smaller one. When I keep their tanks side by side I can see Sangria trying to snap or pounce on Tequila. Meanwhile Tequila just stands there, watches, and then looses interest and walks away :p

Please let me know if anyone is interested ina dopting these cuties, or even better if anyone can recommend an airline where I can take them on board.

Thanks!

You don't have to sell them, hun. Most people, when they have to move from one place to another, will just ship the geckos to their new house in the mail. It should run you around $50-$60 dollars, but you can ship the two of them together. They do just fine being mailed from place to place as long as they're packed securely. Take a look at www.shipyourreptiles.com for instructions and supplies. They can also give you an estimate on exactly how much shipping your leos will cost you.

You've got such pretty little guys there. I'd hate to see you have to give them up.

Do you know if they ship to Canada?

I already checked out Canada's border regulations. They don't have any special documentation requirements for Geckos. They don't even ask for a health certificate. The species just isn't monitored at all by them anymore it seems. So hopefully that won't cause any complications.

I'll still check them out. Thanks alot Khrysty!

Still in case this doesn't work out, if anyone is interested in these geckos or if they know of any airlines which allow geckos as carry on please let me know. Why do the airlines hate geckos so much. :( They allow dogs and cats and hell even birds in some cases yet these beautiful animals are denied. I even had one airline customer rep tell me the "probably" reason why was because they are scary looking?! Some people just don't know what they are talking about. Reptiles get a bad rap as far as I'm concerned. When people think reptiles they right away think cobras, rattlesnakes or things with big teeth and lots of claws and scales. So unfair. :(

:( that is unfair. Let me know how the SYR thing works out for you. And if it doesn't I hope you find some other way to get them out there :)

I guess Canada doesn't care about the geckos being imported - link.
It's just a matter of how much it will cost. I don't know of any airline that will let you check or carry on a reptile. Most require that it travel as cargo (which is different than luggage). I'm sure Delta Dash could transport them but you'll have to call for a price - Geckos are at the very bottom of this page.

If you decide to adopt them out you can make a thread in the Adoption section here.

You can ship reptiles via Air Canada if you have a "Live Animal" shipping account with them. I'm not sure about cross border though. I ship leopard geckos intra-Canada using AC from time to time but I've never tried shipping to/from the US.

The Canadian side is not picky about the geckos but the US side is. The geckos will need a USF&W 3-177 form and an inspection as all reptiles entering or leaving the US regardless of the circumstances need an inspection. The 3-177 is usually filled out by a USF&W Import/Export permit holder but in this case you just fill it out yourself and leave the permit # field blank. The cost of the inspection varies depending on the circumstance. If you're moving you don't pay a fee.

Read through this thread...

You would be much better off if you were driving across the border into Canada at a USF&W staffed location as you would just need to stop at USF&W and get a stamped piece of paper. Don't mention the animals to the Customs officer on the Canadian side. The only reason they would want to involve your geckos is when they want to collect their GST. You're not a Canadian buying the gecko in the US so you don't need to pay GST.

I hope this helps...

I would mind taking the 1 girl in the first 2 pics. And again, to get her to me you'd have to ship, which you could use the ship your reptile website. Anyways, keep us updated & hope you do get to keep them. Maybe you could fly to somewhere right by the border, stay in a hotel, have them shipped there & just drive accross the border. Anyways, good luck :)

Well I may as well make it official. My Leos are gone. I was ablet o find someone to take them in who could give them a good home. :bigcry: I am heart broken about all this but in the end the cost of shipping them to Canada from the USA was just too ridiculous! I could have bought a dozen petshop geckos for the price of sending those two that i had. At least I can take comfort in the fact that I found someone who already has experience with geckos who will give them a good. :)

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I really appreciated it.

When I move back to Canada I will definitly get another gecko and don't worry folks. I know for sure this time I am staying put for a LOOOOONG time so I won't be making the same mistake twice.

Now I just have to figure out what kind of morph to get. Hmm......
