If you order a large quantity some can be refrigerated to slow down growth and keep from turning to larvae. Starting out with one baby, you may want to pick up a smaller amount at the pet store until deciding on feeders.

I order 1000 at a time, and I have 10 geckos, going on 13 in a few days. It lasts me about 2 weeks.

Personally I stay away from pet store feeders whenever possible, because you never get what you pay for. Those cups of 100 mealworms have about 30 in them, at best.

If I were you, i'd start out with about 200, 250 or so. I use mulberryfarms.com. They have always been very easy to work with, and they've allowed me to return if I make a mistake in my order. They're packaging is great, the worms are super healthy, and your package will NEVER be sitting out in the heat. They also reimburse you for any dead worms, should you receive them...but i've never had to do that.

Lasts around 4-6 weeks for me too, i bought 1000 today, since the last 1000 was going down quick, my 3 geckos eat around 20+ worms each day and i feed some to my bearded dragon, i always keep mine in a plastic box with oat and carrots, and if they turn into pupae i put them in a separate box..so far only got 2 turn into pupae, most of the time they are eaten before they turn.

I can't get my two to eat mealworms. One of them will eat one or two sometimes, and it once ate a superworm, but for the most part they won't touch them. They won't eat waxworms either. I put mealworms in the tank, but they just end up either dying or turning into beetles.

Crickets however lead to tail twitching and sometimes one of them marching around the tank with a partly eaten cricket hanging out of his mouth in a "Look what I have" strut. Its kinda funny.

I like to stock up and get 3,000 mealworms and store them all in the fridge, taking them out every 2 weeks for 48 hr feeding. These last me for about 3 months for 5 adult leopard geckos and 3 hatchling leos. Mealworms can last quite a few months in the fridge without pupating as long as you make sure they are being fed and most importantly change the bedding out monthly or if it ever becomes damp!

Last time I ordered 5,000 mealworms for the extra hungry mouths and I'm using about 800 of them for breeding. (Order more if you order online- you might as well get your moneys worth if your paying the shipping!)

I bought 30 crickets last week just to give my guys a little more a varied diet but ugh..... I had forgotten how much I hated crickets, how they make a mess and just hide everywhere- it seems like my guys hardly get to eat. Somehow the crickets squeeze themselves between the floor and the water dish or they'll hide under the darn paper towel. No more crickets unless I have to. :p
