New Cites Quotas on Uroplatus species slated for 2011

There is a new quota slated for Uroplatus species importation in 2011 and from now on. The numbers are MUCH smaller. Here are the new import regulations:

Uroplatus ebenaui 250 live
Uroplatus fimbriatus 312 live
Uroplatus guentheri 125 live
Uroplatus henkeli 125 live
Uroplatus lineatus 63 live
Uroplatus sikorae 2000 live

The document can be found here:

http://www.cites.org/common/quotas/2010/ExportQuotas2010.pdf

Interestingly enough, both U. phantasticus and U. pietschmanni don't even have quotas anymore. I'm not sure if this means these two species will no longer be exported or not. If anyone has any further info on this please chime in.

What this means is that a lot fewer imported Leaf tails will be coming in to the US from now on. There are 14 exporters in Madagascar, divide the above numbers by 14....you get the idea. It also means that a complete ban on importation will most likely soon follow.

What it also means is that those of us who work with Uroplatus need to really step up to the plate with captive breeding efforts. Imported examples of these fascinating species are already known to be difficult to acclimate, and captive bred animals are do MUCH better than wild caughts. There are few people breeding Uroplatus in the US, those of us who do need to get bloodlines cemented and perhaps develop a net work to be sure unrelated animals can be found to out cross with. With U. phantasticus and U. pietshmanni keepers of these two species really need to be on the ball. It's very important that we come together and establish these animals securely in the US, or else we may lose them completely. If any Uroplatus keepers would be interested in working out some sort of blood line record system, I'd be the first to volunteer to help man it. It would really be a shame if these animals faded away because we failed to act accordingly.

I have been told by a friend who is an importer that they will not be coming in after this year. I am planning to grab phants and ebenaui from him, and possibly some others. I would definitely be willing to participate in a breeder's network to help manage the populations.

That's what I thought, that they would no longer be exported at all. I plan on getting several more Uroplatus soon, another female fimbriatus at least, and trios of U. lineatus, U. sikorae, and U. henkeli if I can find them. If your friend has access to any of these species let me know, I am definitely interested in finding a good source of fresh imports. A breeder's network is something I think would be very effective, there's something similar in place in the Amazon Tree Boa world, and these geckos aren't the most prolific. Keeping bloodlines straight is something that I think is important, especially if we want to avoid a situation similar to what is going on in the leachie world.

I'm going to start playing around with a system for keeping population records and see what I can come up with.

I have a buddy on the dart frog forums who is thinking about creating a system to track and manage gecko populations, especially Uroplatus. It may be a while since he is working on one for frogs first, but if you are interested in working with him I can send you his email.

Yeah I'd be interested. No rush on this, I want to do it right so it's going to take time. Send me his email and we'll see where it goes.

Knew it was coming... This is alot sooner than I expected though. Just hope we'll be able to keep the captive populations going!

Tony, please shoot me a heads up if you hear of any phants! I was hoping to add some new blood this fall, but it sounds like it might be a bit tougher than usual.

why not use iherp.com for tracking animals?, it's already out there, so there's noo reason to beat yourselves up trying to build a database from scratch.

This is great! I just found out about U. phantasticus last month and would love to have some in a decade or so when I am a more experienced gecko keeper, but obviously these quotas are being put in place in order to try and protect the species. I really hope that you can get a network of breeders going so that hobbyists can enjoy healthy and happy captive-bred specimens of these amazing lizards for years and years to come! After all we need to show people that these amazing creatures' habitat is worth fighting for, and what better way to do that then with awesome geckos themselves? If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

I have some issues with the iherp system.

Also, the idea is have a established network of dedicated Uroplatus enthusiasts, not necessarily herpers in general. Dedicated to the genus specifically.

Even though I enjoy my morphs, I also enjoy my normal, wild-type geckos. I wish such network were in place for a few other species. You dendro-nuts seem to be a fairly well knit group, even with those that bump heads willing to help each other out. That said, my ability to keep some (most) Uroplatus species is limited by my ability to afford actual proper housing outside of their actual habitats and also one of the reasons why I don't have dart frogs. If I could keep any of my rooms cool enough to the point of working with some of the smaller Uroplatus I'd be all over it like white on rice. Good luck to you guys!

PS Anyone know if Neil Meister still works with phants? I know he was having some great success with the species. I want to say Phil Tremper and one other (Lyle Puente? maybe Tim Tytle?) were having successes with other species of Uroplatus, as well as some of the New Zealand species that required cooler temps. But that info is from back in the days when I participated on GGA (gekkota.com)

I decided not to pursue any Uroplatus projects, but for those of you still involved have you considered applying for ISIS membership? That would allow you to register and track geckos in the network with the same system the zoos use.

I am almost through with my project. Uroplatus Network will be a site for others to track bloodlines, with the ability to hand off animals to others. Along with lineage tracking, there is med and general husbandry logs as well.

Just need to get a bit more motivation to finish it up.

Neil is still doing quite a bit of work with phants and several other Uroplatus species. I'm in contact with him and a few other people who have been doing their part of reproduce Uroplatus in captivity. Slowly but steadily a network of breeders is being established to develop unrelated, documented lines of Uroplatus. It's slow going, mostly because the genus in general is relatively slow to reproduce, but it is moving.
