Western Banded Gecko acting strange

Hi, I have two Western Banded Geckos--one male and one female. For the winter, the only light I have on them during the day is a fluorescent fixture. Both have not been eating much all winter, which as far as I know is normal. The female I don't think I have seen come out from under their little rock at all for a few months now, while the male comes out for a few hours shortly after the lights go off at night.

The last few days, the male gecko has been out sleeping in the light during the day. He stands up really high off the branch while he sleeps. I have convinced him to go back under his rock a few times, but he keeps coming back out and standing up like a spooked cat. Anybody know what he's doing? Is this normal?

Edit: He also seems a little lethargic. Normally he really freaks out if I touch him, but when he is like this I can pick him up before he runs away. I know sometimes reptiles seem more relaxed when they're half asleep, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Cute gecko. I keep these as well. No idea. As long as he's eating and his tail looks decent, he may as well do as he pleases. I have some leos that like to sleep out of the hides as well.

Well, the female actually came out for the first time in a while, and she ate when I fed her. I tried to feed the male, and it didn't eat. Then while messing with him, he freaked out at one point and fell about 15 inches, and when he landed his tail started wiggling around really crazy. He eventually calmed down and when I looked at him later, his tail was gone. So now if he's sick, I'm sure he's probably going to die. :(

I'm sorry he's not doing well. He may have dropped his tail because of stress or injury. I would separate them if possible, keep him warm and offer food frequently.

Yes, my first thought looking at this is that he's trying to get warm. I know that won't happen with the fluorescent light fixture, but it appears that he's trying to use the sun to warm up. You may want to try warming him up a bit to help with his recovery.

Sorry for your loss. I have had some Coleonyx who have done well for years and others who have gotten thinner and weaker and then just wasted away. I've had my current breeding pair for 4 years (male) and 2 years (female) and they look really good. I assume you have C. variegates? I will have some (hopefully) this summer that are white and beige instead of yellow and beige, though I am across the country from you.

Yes, Coleonyx variegatus is what they are. I go to the desert often during the summer because of my main interest which happens to be ant keeping, so I'm sure I will find myself another male. My hope was to get some babies.

I'm very sorry to hear that.

I have mitratus and I don't use lighting with them at all. Just heat tape and they like to hide a lot. It's hard to tell if yours was trying to get warm or was stressed. I found this care sheet online that is older, but still looks decent. geckos - Care Sheets Information about Western Banded Geckos Lizards geckos ,characteristics and sexing, Description of Diet, Diet-Carnivorous,Supplements, Nutrition and Usage - calcium and vitamins, Lighting and UVB,Tempatures and Humidity,Caging, S

Just read this story sorry for your loss but first off Leo's are nocturnal and don't need or want light for heat or anything but to tell the difference from night and day you need under heaters and another warm hide so they may each have a place to lay also you must keep a cup of calcium and vit d in a dish for them to lick when the feel like
