Hello all!

In the second year of Product Design A Level I was given an open brief, meaning I could make just about anything. So it was only natural I immediately selected to make my little dear Artemis a new home!

The tank will be crafted with an Iroko wood frame and a styrofoam landscape insert with underground cave system and living air plant. It will also have hand cast pewter gecko shaped hingers, latches and handles and thin led lighting strip (if I get time for this)

Below is my computer generated rapid prototyping design to show the shape. The long thin section at the bottom will be stainless steel mesh for ventilation although the picture doesn't show this as there was no texture for mesh!

There are a few questions I wanted to pose for you all however. Will traditional glass do or do I need to find a source for tempered/speciality glass instead? Also for the styrofoam insert, could anyone reccomend a good paint/sealant to use to make sure the entire thing is safe and not the lurid blue of naked styrofoam? I live in the UK so a british brand would be ideal.

Thanks everyone and I will be keeping this updated as I go!

Well I'm a union glazier by trade, which really means I am a glass guy. Tempered glass is stronger but would be quite expensive to use no reason you can't just use plate glass much cheaper and you could do yourself. Maybe add hinges on thee top for access.

Ah great thankyou! I thought it would be just plate but I wasn't 100% sure. Yep, each two of the largest door panels with have 3 cast pewter hinges on either side, if that's what you mean?

More updates! Bottom section is glued together now and styrofoam insert is complete! Got some snaps from the progress for you all.

Carving foam!

Finished carving/grouting! This was the first coat of paint which was very yellow, it is a lot more toned down now. The bit with its lid of bottom left is moist hide. The bit with the stairs is cool hide and the bit with the cave entrance is hot hide. Water and calcium dishes are the two holes on the top edge.

Finished and sealed hot hide section in the correct colour. No more yellow!

Things are really coming together, will continue to keep you all updated!

Very nice! I am super impressed. It came out very nicely. I will be really surprised if you don't get high marks on it. Your geckos will love it when you finally can take it home! [emoji2]

I lied it wasn't done! Added little curled up gecko handles just to finish!

@Cowana @Joulesburn Thanks guys!

@Ruvik It's an idea, but it took such a long while and was so much stress to craft that I'm not sure it would be workable. It sure did make me realise what a shallow range of vivarium styles are available on the wider market though, having more shaped ones like this would be so great!
