Looking for other breeders advice on the best way to heat a rack, whether to build one plastic or wood Im a beginner to leopard geckos breeding always kept them as pets any advice would be really appreciated thanks :main_yes:
I've seen a lot of wooden racks (in fact I have one) but I haven't seen too many plastic racks. It would seem that some kinds of plastic may let off fumes that could be harmful when heated so I would do some research if you decide to go that way.
As for heating - the easiest option is 3 inch Flex Watt heat tape. You can buy it from lots of online stores and its relatively cheap (like $2-3 a foot). You could also use heat cable tho I'm not totally sure where you get it. Either way you'll need a decent thermostat like a Herpstat.
I can say I'm not fond of heat cables....even with heat resistant tape they are forever come off and if they aren't touching the glass they don't work that well.
Yeah I got a heat cable rack from animal plastics. The cable looks a bit too big to put in a rack that doesn't have a groove cut into the back to fit it. In a rack that was made for it, however, I'm not sure there's anything better!
I built a rack and used heat cable and totally hated it. It does not heat very well. I switched to animals plastic and cserpent racks with heat tape and it is a huge upgrade. The heat tape heats a larger surface area and gives off a more even heat.
i built a rack original for temporary houseing of snakes i got in trade. well needless to say i made suposed beginer mistake and used one strand of cable for a entire tub. well it actualy worked perfect. i dont use and thermostat. i just but strand it gets 90 along the cable, 85 shortly after and 80 allround except in hide. i used a15-19 foot cable and ran it for three shelves plus my dubia colonys on the bottom then ran it up to heat the top for any bins/tanks on top.
