XRay Evaluation: "What's Wrong In The XRay Part 4"

Signalment: Unknown age, guessing about 6 to 8 years old, spayed female, domestic shorthair feline. Feral cat. Presents for anorexia (not eating).

Physical Exam: Temperature normal/ small kidneys, barely able to palpate/ short of breath, open mouth breathing/ heart rate elevated, but within normal limits, no murmur heard. Unknown/assumed no vaccine history, unknown Leukemia/FIV status.

History of POSSIBLY hit by car in the past.

Here is an XRay we took. What is going on???

I am going to guess fractured ribs which would explain the trouble in breathing and not eating. I am probably wrong.

Are her organs in her chest cavity? I have NEVER been able to lok at xrays, or unltrasounds for that matter.

Yes.
This poor kitty had a diaphragmatic hernia, in other words, a hole in her diaphragm, which allowed most of her small and large intestine to slip through and sit in the chest. Since this was a feral, there wasn't much we could do for the poor kitty. She was humanely euthanized. Apparently, she had been living like this for quite some time. Very interesting case.

God she was just skinny. hernias suck, especially in animals like cats who will try their damned hardest to act like nothings wrong. Unfortunately, at that point and her condition surgery and recovery would be a fight against the odds, HE was probably the best for her.

I'm not as bad as I thought!!
We had the same thing come in, an 8 week old kitten. Poor thing.
