Getting back into it

I'm Weiand. I am setting up for Leo's. I've been out of the reptile / arachnipod / fish / etc. life for about 15 years.
Slowly and small getting back in. Setting up a tank for Leo's right now. Just taking it slow to get the area of the house right, the stand right, tank set up and tested all before actually getting any Leo's.
I'm sure I can find most of the info I'm lacking here in the forum. Seems I have forgotten a lot, but I"m sure it will be "Oh yea" after not too long.

Welcome. Some of the info has changed a bit in the last 15 years, which was when I got started. For example, I was originally told that a 10 gallon is adequate for a single leo, but the prevailing wisdom now seems to be that a 20 long is best. It seems that everyone was keeping calcium in the cage, and now there is concern that the gecko might get too much calcium that way.

I've got a tall 29 gallon tank, under tank heater pad, shallow heavy water dish decent size, 1 humidty gauge. Will stillneed 1 more of those & two temp gauges for both hot and cold side. Still deciding on hides and climbs.
Seems from what I've been reading crickets will be their main staple with meal worms a couple times a week.
I've not had a leo before. Always had much bigger. Looking at the long run and space wise, smaller seems a better start for now. Two female Leo's should do well in that tank even after reaching adult size. If not, as time goes on, can always add another tank to seperate them.
My biggest thing is working out which lights to get to keep the proper temps in both sides and make sure it does not get too hot in there.
The store was out of the metal mesh lid that fit my tank which I will be getting with the clamps to hold it it closed.
Substrate will be the brown "carpet" like stuff with some sandstone type tiles giving them both rock and non rock area to play on.
Just taking it slow to set everything up, then I can watch the habitat for a week or so to see what temps an humidity is like, then bring home the Leo's
(which well I'm guessing that should be in a diff section of the forum on set up and all.)

I don't think the temp and humidity gauges are that accurate. I don't worry about humidity. Living in New England with forced hot air heat in winter and no humidity in summer, I'm sure the humidity is all over the map and there's nothing I can do about it. Everybody thrives. The best way to accurately measure temperature is with a digital thermometer with probe or with a laser temperature gun. In my opinion, as long as the hot side floor is the correct temperature (low 90'sF) and the ambient temperature is comfortable for humans, the air temperature doesn't matter too much. For heat, I'd highly recommend under tank heater with thermostat. You can use lights if you want, but it's dicey trying to control heat with them and as long as there is daylight in the room the gecko lives in, additional lighting is unnecessary.
