New to Geckos and Here to Learn

My 7-year-old daughter has wanted a "lizard" for a very long time. We recently got her a male Leopard Gecko from someone who had one who could no longer keep him. According to them, he should now be 8 months old, but I'm not sure that is accurate. We went into a local reptile store "just to look around" today that came highly recommended - it's not a chain. My daughter fell in love with a Gecko and we brought her home. After doing some lurking and reading here this afternoon, I'm guessing it would be best if we separate the two, although introductions went well and they seem okay together. Advice is welcome and requested, but please be gentle. As I said, I am here to learn and we are very excited about having Geckos.

The male is the black and white and the female is the whitish yellow. I've searched online and can't find one that looks like her. I'm wondering what kind she is.

Welcome to GF. The female is an albino, likely a Tremper. You're right, you need to separate the male and the female (it may already be too late but separate them anyway) for 2 reasons:
--new geckos or geckos purchased at the same time from different places need to be quarantined from each other so if one has a problem it doesn't pass to the other one.
--putting a male and a female together is asking for eggs and I don't think you're ready to deal with that

Some people do keep their leopard geckos on sand, but I recommend not to start out that way due to possibility of impaction. More appropriate substrates include paper towel, repti-carpet and ceramic tile.

I recommend that you read some care sheets about leopard geckos because the pet stores often have poor information. For a start, here's mine:
