new ball..and my hand

so my friend(very reliable when it comes to snakes) gave me a ball python. i have had one before(a petc0 ball) but never had one do this before.....he(the snake) will stay in his hide most of the day, and then as soon as my hand goes in there to lift his water bowl or fix his hide he comes out and seems interested in my hand. i have never been bitten before nor do i want to. i am sure he just wants to be held, or is wondering what i am doing. does anyone else's ball do this? or should i be a little cautious?
