New to Geckos - A Few Questions

So I would really like a Bearded Dragon however I don't have the room for a fully grown one. I've been told to look at a Gecko and I'm really liking what I've been able to find out about these little guys so far. I just have a few questions that I'm hoping you would be able to answer.

I was originally looking at Madagascar Ground Geckos however looking around a few stores, I haven't been able to find any to take a real look at (I live in England). I have been able to find a lot of Leopard Geckos which I do like, but I'm not too keen on the Geckos with no patterns in their bodies. Do breeders allow you to specify what type of 'Morph' your Gecko has or is this unpredictable? If so, what types of Morphs are there that would be the most suitable? Which is the most recommended type for a first type reptile owner?

With the Vivarium I have seen a few types that would be ideal, one of these is 57.5cm x 37.5cm x 42cm with a wooden frame and glass panels on the front. Another one is a 50cm x 50cm x 30cm glass panel tank with a mesh roof and swing open doors on one side.

Looking around it looks like the wooden Viv is best as this insulates heat better and the length of it will help provide a more divided warm and cold area. It also helps with providing more hiding space for the Gecko. It would also help as I would be able to place things on-top of the viv (more storage space for me!). What would be the best vivarium for a Gecko?

While researching what Geckos need I have a few concerns as well. I'm not sure which substrate would be best, a few people have said that carpets are a bad idea as the Geckos can get their nails caught or their jaw stuck while feeding. I know that they are not desert animals and sand is a bad idea and there are a few recommended substrates to use however what is the most recommended substrate to use? From looking around it looks like tiles are the best but looking at these, they don't really seem natural or comfy for the gecko. Also how does the flooring work with heat mats?

I've also read that you don't particularly need a light in the viv unless its for your own use. Is this the case or does it help to have a UV/ normal light or something in? What other equipment will I also need to buy?
  • Vivarium
  • Substrate
  • Thermometer (x2)
  • Hygrometer
  • Heat mats
  • Which type of light(s)?

Would it also help to have rocks and things for the Gecko to climb on or are the Leopard Geckos not very big climbers?

What is the most recommended 'period of time' to handle the Gecko? I would suspect from a young age to handle them for a couple of minutes a day to get them use to been handled however is there such a thing as too much/little handling?

I've also looked into this and I'm thinking of getting a cricket keeper to look after the crickets, are these really worth having? Also how often do the crickets need powder on their food and of which type?

Any help with these questions would be much appreciated. I'd like to make sure I can give a Gecko a good home before buying one.

Also.. I intend to name it Blink. :)

Welcome to GF and great idea to do all this research before getting the gecko.

As far as your care questions go, rather than type a 10-page post, I would just direct you to read the care sheet on my website (Geckcessories | Leopard Geckos and Ceramic Gecko Accessories). You could read a few care sheets by using google and then come back and ask more specific questions (unless you've already done that).

Brief responses:
I use ceramic tile. It conducts the heat well. The geckos seem fine with it
I don't bother with a cricket keeper (I get 2000 crickets every 2 weeks, so that would be impractical) and keep them in a 5 gallon tank
Leopard geckos are terrestrial, though some do like to climb on low rocks
You don't need a hygrometer or lights

I'll leave a little for other people to answer
