Well, my vacation had started off on a bad note, but things are looking up. I've gotten some great pics of the local herps.
Here's the Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) I was hoping I'd find her on the inside of the fence, and maybe catch her at her hole, but she never seems to be there. If she has any eggs laid they should hatch sometime this month or next. Would like to be able to catch a glimpse of the babies.
Now this little stinker had me fooled at first of his ID until I was able to look at the photos I took. He was very quick and I was able to get a video of him eating ants. My first guess was a Fived Linned Skink as I was taking the pics, but after viewing the images I noticed he had too many lines, he's a Six-Lined Racerunner (Cnemidophorus sexlineatus).
When I first came up on this guy he ran toward the fence and I was not able to take a picture. I stood there a min and I noticed he came back to where he was a first and I got the above pics. Then I noticed that he was eating the ants that I had scared him away from. He acted as he could care less that I was there and all he wanted to do was eat.
The video is not all that great on Photobucket but you'll get the idea.

Here's the Five-Lined Skink (Eumeces fasciatus) The little stinker wouldn't come out all the way so I could get his tail in the picture. I've found a lot of them around here ranging in size from hatchling to adult, but they are very fast and hard to catch on camera. I remember catching these as a child in Miami, I don't remember them being this fast!?!?!?!
More pics coming.....
